I'm having trouble getting rid of Winfixer popups. I have and use regularly Ad-aware SE, SpyBot S&D and Trend Micro PCcillin and I have run all these with no resolution to my Winfix problem. I haven't done anything with registry's so didn't want to go that route without help from experts :woot: I did re-able all the disabled items in my msconfig and I know there are gobs of them but don't know how to get rid of them only to disable them so my computer runs faster. Here is my Hijack This Log....I hope someone can help me with this.
Thanks in advance.

Hello, BostonSdkck.

Please print these instructions out or save them in notepad for use in Safe Mode.
(Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad)

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode please delete the following file:
  • C:\WINDOWS\System32\loghostsmss32.exe
  • Then open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

Hi OwNt,

Hit my first snag before getting out of the gate :)
My computer will open in Safe Mode but all that is on the screen is black and the words Safe Mode on the bottome like it's supposed to be but there is nothing I can click on to get my desktop or even the start button to show. I've tried opening it in all three types of Safe Mode and I get the same black screen and have to hit the reset button because I can't even shut the computer down from that Safe Mode screen.

Sorry to be such a bother to you :tazz:

Thanks,
BostonSdkck

Hello, BostonSdkck.

You arn't a bother at all, complications happen when dealing with malware. :tazz:

I need to know what version of InCD you have. When you run InCD, it may tell you on the splash screen, if not then there should be a tab called About or Info, that should say what version # it is when you click on them.

Please post back the version #, if you can find it.

I went to C:\Program Files\Ahead but there was no InCD file there to open. I don't ever remember opening that program....is it part of Nero cause most of the files in the Ahead folder are Nero related?
I also did a search for that file name and nothing came up at all.
The only other thing I did after doing the HijackThis log was to go and turn off all those start up items that I had turned on to run the tests when first reading what to do before using HijackThis. Would that cause the InCD folder or program to not show up in the Ahead folder?
I do have my settings set to show hidden files so I know that wouldn't be the problem.
Thanks for your time,
BostonSdkck

Hello, BostonSdkck.

Yes, InCD is part of NERO, which is made by Ahead. No, that would not cause it to not be seen. From what I see on your Hijackthis log, InCD should be in C:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCD.exe

We'll work on the safe mode problem later, though.

Please print these instructions out or save them in notepad for use in Safe Mode.
(Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad)

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Good evening OwNt,

I did what you asked of me and wanted to tell you a little about what I found or rather didn't find while doing it :tazz: First thing out of whack was I didn't find C:\WINDOWS|System32\loghostsmss32.exe
So I tried to go on with the instructions since I was to delete that file anyway.
Here is a screen shot of what files were in System32 where the loghost file should have been...

Posted Image

I ran KillVundo.bat and when the HiJackThis opened and I looked for the files to check...

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geebb.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [run32diagexpolerx] C:\WINDOWS\System32\loghostsmss32.exe %srun%
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [smss32logx] C:\WINDOWS\System32\loghostsmss32.exe %srun%
O20 - Winlogon Notify: geebb - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geebb.dll

To make is short here I'll use the numbers before the file names....the 02 and 020 files said they didn't find them. And the two 04 files weren't in there at all.... I put a check on the 02 and 020 files and clicked FIX CHECKED as instructed.

Ran CleanUp! and OMG recovered 3.4 GB of space.....didn't know they were hiding in there!! I do the cleaning of internet files regularly too!! I'm hanging on to this little program if it's okay with you?

Now here is my ActiveScan results.....

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/StartPage.AIW No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttq.dll

And while running the ActiveScan, TrendMicro popped up with a Trojan...which it quarantined (sp?) and here is a screen shot of that file name in the quarantined folder of TrendMicro.

Here is my new HiJackThis log....

Hello, BostonSdkck.

Your Hijackthis log looks clean now, except for 1 minor entry. This should clear up the infection.
You can hang on to Cleanup if you want, it's amazing how many junk files just pile up on your computer, isn't it?

Please open Hijackthis, Scan, and put a checkmark by the following file:

O23 - Service: CWShredder Service - Unknown owner - C:\Documents and Settings\rachilla\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\7KXVZ0GS\cwshredder[1].exe (file missing)

Close ALL Open Windows/Browsers and click Fix Checked.

1) Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

2) Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

3) Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.

4) Select "Delete on Reboot".

5) Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\loghostsmss32.exe

6) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

7) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..

Let the system reboot.

How is your system running right now?

:woot: :tazz: :)
Good afternoon OwNt,
Can you tell by the smilies that I'm a happy person?? haha I might even be in "LOVE" :woot:
My computer is running PERFECT!! And it even went right into Safe Mode without any trouble at all....
That dang malware was a nasty one :P
I want to thank you a million times for all your help....your a real charm!!
If there is ever anything I can do for you please don't hesitate to ask :)

I also wanted to tell you that InCD shows up from my start up menu....I went to msconfig and saw it there so I turned it back on and then did a HiJackThis run and it showed up again....so I ran to the Ahead folder again but alas no InCD was there still. I just went back in to msconfig and turned it off again since you said you didn't need it.

Thanks again my dear for helping me with this horrible problem :woot: If there is a boss or forum leader or anyone else reading this 100 thumbs up for OwNt...they are the best!!!
