You don't have any driver CD's? Did you purchase this commercially? What burning software do you have? Nero...Roxio?

Hi daparker, I bought the PC used. I don't have any CD's or manuals for it at all. It is an emachine T2260. It came with a factory installed DVD ROM, and a compact disk rewritable drive.

If you can tell me where to look I will get the information that you asked about.

Thanks
Wendy

Run HijackThis and click on the button for the miscellaneous tools. Next, click on Open Uninstall Manager. Then, click on Save List. Save it on your desktop, then go to your desktop and open that file up. Copy the text from there and paste it in your next respose.

I don't see any burning software there either. At this point, I have to say that your problem is most likely not related to malware, which is the purpose of this forum, so you may to try your issue in one of the computer issues forums here on G2G.

System issues are not my strong suit, so I really won't be able to provide much more in the way of help.

Hi daparker, well the CD burning thing doesn't bother me, it's the random restarting that is driving me up a wall. So this HJT log looks clean?
Thanks Wendy

Hi daparker, OK here it is. I actually hope that you can find something evil in here so I can kill it. Hey as you can see I have the Microsoft IE v 6.00 browser installed. So why would Avast! always be scanning stuff in IE 5, and never in IE 6?

Thanks
Wendy

I don't really see anything that would be causing reboots. As I said before, you would have to look for errors corresponding to the time the reboot happened. I am not sure what you mean by scanning IE5 items.

Hi daparker, Good. So far my system has not rebooted by it's self in the last couple of days.

OK, Avast! has an animation that you can set to run so that you can see what it's scanning through. I can see where it says that it is scanning through "Temporary Internet Files\Content IE5\" Why is it doing that?

Thanks, Wendy

That is just a folder that exists on your system. It is scanning your filesystem and one of the folders is called Content IE5.

Hi daparker, Thanks, But shouldn't it also be looking in IE 6? The rebooting thing seems to have stopped, however IE has started hanging once or twice a day now. Oh well, such is life I guess.

I guess that if you don't see anything evil here you can go ahead and close this thread. I can always start a new one if things get too hectic.

Thanks Wendy

You probably had IE5 installed first and when you installed IE6, it just used the existing temporary folder. Again, nothing malicious here.

The issue of IE hanging is different, however. What do you mean it hangs?

Hi daparker, OK I don't know if it is called a hang, or or a crash, or why, but it gets kind of stuck, and doesn't want to go anywhere.

Sometimes it will say " Not Responding" up at the top of the IE, and at other times it doesn't say anything, until I give up waiting for it to go to whatever site I was on my way to, and click on the red X to close the browser. Then it will get that "Not Responding" notice on it.

Then it will give me the little thing that asks if I want to "end now" or "cancel" I always have to click "end now" to get anything to happen.

Then I get the little screen that asks if I want to send an error report to Microsoft. I always sent them one too.

Then I open a new browser, and go on about my business. Some times the IE is the only, thing that I know of, other than my Anti Virus program, that I have running. At other times I have had yahoo messenger open.

Hum? Well there might be something running that I can't see, because I get the notice on the attached pic anytime that I try to retrieve messages online. But still, I have no idea what it could be, because I don't have anything on.

Tell me if it makes any sense to you. Thanks
Wendy

Do you have the latest version of the google toolbar? I know older versions had issues with hanging IE.
