When I try to load the DOS prompt, the window appears filled with a bunch of symbols and this message pops up:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.com
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0547 IP:ffe2 OP:fe ff 1d 09 72 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
[close] [ignore]

I just got my cable fixed and the repair guy for some reason loaded DOS and alerted me to this problem. I haven't noticed it affecting anything but I want to know if it is a problem. Thank you for any information and help you can offer me!

You might want to try this fix first, courtesy of Starjax

Could you do a screen capture of the cmd window and post it as an attachment?

Well it seems to be saying that your video card cpu was given an illegal instruction! Was the card a recent install? You might check on Google or at the mobo or card maker's sites for any kind of updates on the problem.

OK....sorry it took so long to respond. I went to the video card (ATI Radeon 9000 Pro) manufacturers website and downloaded the latest driver and it is still giving me the same message when I run the cmd prompt. :tazz:

I was having the same problem you are having to some extent. Whenever I tried the ping command I would get that error. This worked for me:

Download Alcan.zip
Unzip it to your desktop
Reboot in safe mode <--- has to be done!
Open the unzipped Alcan folder and run alcanfix.bat
If you get the illegal instruction error, choose ignore
Reboot back to normal mode
Try to open your command prompt

Hope this works for you as well as it worked for me. :tazz:
