MODEM Disappears in XP

About every 7 or 8 times I attempt to connect using an external USR modem, the modem is not found.
Device Mgr shows it is not installed. Modem returns after doing a system restore or sometimes after
rebooting. Can't figure this one out!!!

The modem is an external 56k USR Sporter.. I have newer modems, but had to revert to this to get descent
dial up speed in the boondocks.
