restoring presario 5010us

trying to restore a 4 year old presario. cd/dvd drive/burner is only extra drive that works. took old cd burner out and put in sony dv burner. other drive is still in pc & hooked up BUT disabled. having boot problems. instx for restore disc is to put disc in drive, then restart. always goes to windows without reading restore disc. been messing with this for a day now an need ideas.
