I converted .mov files into .avi files with IMtoo MOV Converter 6. I then went to import them into my collections in Windows Moviemaker and the errormessage says the avi could not be imported the required codec was not downloaded automatically because the download codecs automatically check box is not selected in the options dialog box - but the three things that arein the dialog box are checked. They are Real Media Splitter 1.0.1.1, Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder 6.1.7140.0. I am thinking I may need to download a specific codec or is there a way to get these converted avi files to import into collections in my Moviemaker 2.6 for Windows 7?

Steve's reply was for WMM 6. This is only for VISTA. The original question - and mine too - is for XP. I tried one free converter pgm but it still didn't work. All the new cameras use .mov (thank goodness I still have an old Fuji that produces .avi). I take a LOT of video and need to convert. Some day I guess I'll have Win 7 and can use Live Movie Maker but that is a while - and they'll probably come up with a new format by then ;-(

Anyone else have success?

After going through and trying a bunch of video converters, each one had a loss in quality. And if free they came with some adware. Anyway the best way I found was to use windows LIVE movie maker to convert the .MOV video into a .wmv using a custom setting to mach the quality of my camera. Then I was able to make a movie using Windows Live Movie Maker without any dumb errors.

I think the reason the methods being suggested here work for some people and not for others is that some people have installed a codec pack at some point and others haven't. I just tried the suggestions and only got an error message about codecs when I tried to open in Movie Maker. I then download and installed a free codec pack safely from here: [url="http://majorgeeks.co...eeks.com/K-Lite Mega Codec Pack

[b]Now when I drag or paste my .mov fle into movie maker, the icon appears in the project window and will play, but the image is solid black the entire time, on both the playback sceen and the timeline. Anyone know why this might be?
