Hi,

My wife's laptop asked if she wanted to run lockx.exe upon bootup. Before I could get it cleaned up, it stopped booting all together. Now, it only boots up in Safe Mode. I have downloaded all the suggested utilities, and they found quite a bit, but it has not fixed the problem. Also, the Ad Aware SE personal hangs when running. The log file from HJT is below. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Anyone have any ideas for this problem? Obviously, I would like to avoid wiping out my wife's harddrive if at all possible.

Thanks!

Hello Michael and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PCís (family PCís) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individualís setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Letís see what we can do with the first sweep.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stratas] lockx.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SECRETSERVICE] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CyberLink\PowerDVD\HTML\help\v1rg1n.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [stratas] lockx.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [stratas] lockx.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete these files (if present) using Windows Explorer:

lockx.exe Ė use search to find this file
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CyberLink\PowerDVD\HTML\help\v1rg1n.exe

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look.

If your PC again boots to safe mode, try this:

During a boot, keep tapping the F8 key and choose Normal mode from the advanced menu or go to Start>Run>type in Msconfig>hit ENTER>Boot.ini and uncheck SafeBoot>Apply, reboot.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. I followed the instructions, but when I reboot, it still freezes at the normal boot-up screen. When rebooting into Safe Mode (and re-running HJT), you can see that the entries re-appear. I searched for the files again, and the lockx.exe is not found during a search (that included all hidden files).

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Hello again Michael

We can run this fix in safe mode OK. Letís see if this gets rid of Lock.

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection by choosing Remove
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stratas] lockx.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SECRETSERVICE] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CyberLink\PowerDVD\HTML\help\v1rg1n.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\adwarealert.Exe -boot
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [stratas] lockx.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [stratas] lockx.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

Adware Alert

Please notify me of any other programmes that you donít recognise in that list in your next response

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this folder (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\

Please delete these files (if present) using Windows Explorer:

lockx.exe Ė [i]use search to find this file[/b]
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CyberLink\PowerDVD\HTML\help\v1rg1n.exe

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look.

Thanks for the help. I followed your instructions, and the computer still hangs when attempting to boot in normal mode. After the Ewido scan and the HJT scan, the entries reappear in HJT. Below are the log files from Ewido and HJT (in safe mode). I don't know if this matters, but the computer won't shutdown (even in Safe Mode). In order to reboot (or shutdown), I have to physically hold-down the power button.

Looking forward to anymore ideas!

Hello again Michael

This might look a little onerous, but just take it steady and hopefully all will be well. Fingers crossed for you (Iím told it helps).

Please download AproposFix from here:
AproposFix

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Download WinPFind: WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet

Download and unzip BruteForceUninstaller

Right Click the Zip folder and select "Extract All"

Locate and double click BFU.exe

Now locate and click the Greenish Blue globe with the chord plugged into it

When the next small window pops up-> Copy&Paste this URL into it and click OK
http://webpages.char...er/lockxbot.bfu

Now click the execute button and let the script run

From the AproposFix please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

The tool creates a log of what happened in the aproposfix folder (log.txt)

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder

Post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the logs from WinPFind and the AproposFix
