Hi everyone! I'm new here and I need help, lots and lots of help. 6 people use this computer for everything from schoolwork to playing games to surfing the web, and it is very very sick now. My father has completely given up trying to fix it, every time one thing is fixed something else will go wrong. So now it's up to me to try to help and I have NO IDEA where to even start on this poor abused machine...the browser has been hijacked, there are popups galore, (usually telling me my computer is infected with spyware, duh) and some nasty little bug that likes to take control of the cursor and make it zip around the screen opening everything it touches. This one seems to have stopped since it dragged the start menu toolbar so its hidden below the bottom of the screen, but I'm sure it will be back. I've downloaded HijackThis and my log will be below. Thank you in advance for your help, and please use small words when telling me what to do...I have absolutely NO technical computer knowledge!

Hi there MissKris,

I'm currently working on your log, and as soon as another staff member reviews it I'll post a reply.

Thank you for your patience.

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Thanks,

Nick

Thank you Nick! I am trying to do what you asked, but when I tried to get the update I got an error message instead. After going to the help page for that, I was told to "1. Register the following files
Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type regsvr32 wuapi.dll.
Click OK.
Repeat steps 1 through 4 for the following files: wuaueng.dll, wucltui.dll, wups.dll, wuweb.dll,atl.dll."

I got regsvr32 wuapi.dll. to work but the other ones won't run. So then after "using the web service to find the appropiate application" for that one I was told that "This file is part of an application or Microsoft Windows. This file will be used by the application or Microsoft Windows. You can find who created this file by right clicking on the file choosing Properties, and selecting the Version tab. If you are unable to find information at the above location, you can search the following Web sites for related software and information: CKNOW.COM | UK Technical Support | Download.com | MSN | Shareware.com

The second option they gave me had the same results...I'm so lost...where do I go now? :tazz:

Hi MissKris,

First of all, you will want to print out this post so that you have a hard copy of these instructions.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:
===================================================
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\intell32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P.S.Guard] C:\Program Files\P.S.Guard\PSGuard.exe

===================================================

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick...
Well I've done everything up to using panda scan...every time I try to scan, I get a window saying my current settings prohibit ActiveX to run. I went to internet options>security>custom level and enabled everything to do with ActiveX and tried again to no avail. Thank you so much for the help, I really hope I did everything right! :-)

Hi MissKris,

Is everything supposed to be fixed at this point? My browser is still hijacked and I still have the virus that takes control of the cursor...thanks (yet again) for the help

You have several different infections on your computer, and I am taking them out one at a time. :tazz:

Now to get rid of your CWS infection.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

This will likely be a few step process in removing the malware that has infected your system. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

You have a nasty CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download SpSeHjfix Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Unzip SpSeHjfix to its own folder (ie c:\SpSeHjfix)

Run the CleanUp! installer. You dont need to do anything with it right now.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run SpSeHjfix. A log will be saved in the same folder that you put the exe into. Please post the results of that log in your next reply.

Now run CleanUp!. Click CleanUp and allow it to delete all the temporary files.Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log.

Thanks,

Nick

I wasn't given the option to save the results of the online virus scan, I used TrendMicro. Should I do it again? It found 4 instances of spyware....I hope I didn't mess anything up! Your instructions were very easy to follow, that was the only place I had trouble. When I ran AboutBuster it never said anything about searching for "alternate data streams" Here is the log for that:

I almost forgot...my internet explorer won't open now...the only way I can get online is through my AIM welcome screen. :tazz: Did I delete something I needed?

Hi Kris,

Very well done, you are almost clean. :tazz:
We just need to do a bit of cleaning up.

Please run HijackThis and scan. Please place checkmarks next to the following entries:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O21 - SSODL: BLSykrSlNQ - {1C99D008-B633-7AA2-D67C-B69057E2EAD6} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkyn.dll (file missing)
When you have checked all the entries, please close all browsers and windows other than HijackThis and click "Fix Checked".

Other than that, your HijackThis log appears to be CLEAN!!!

Here is a list of tools I like to suggest to users to prevent future infections.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware -Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  • Weather Watcher - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light.
  • Firefox- Internet Explorer is NOT the most secure browser. I highly recommend Firefox as a safer alternative.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

The staff over at the Internet and Browsers Forum should be able to deal with your internet problem :)

Thanks,

Thank you so much Nick!! Everything is running much much better now..I definitely couldn't have fixed this by myself :) Hopefully I won't have such a huge mess to deal with again..I'll be using those links you gave me, with so many people on this computer I doubt it will stay clean very long without LOTS of protection! Thanks again (for the millionth time)!!
