Hiya,
Ok it could be a bad conection or a bad cable connecting to the hard drive. What kind of hard drive is it. and do you hear it spin and work when you turn your computer on?

Ok before we buy anything i want to make sure we cant fix it other wise

do you have more than one hard drive in your computer?

does the hard drive light come on when you turn on your computer?

Does it show up in you bios?

And what was the last thing done on the computer before it did this?

And ya that is the one you are looking for.

There is only one hard drive in there, 55 gig hard drive.

I cant find the light... is it on the hard drive?

in bios it says "unknown device"

last thing i did was take out the 250 gb maxtor hard drive which was a slave to the 55gb hard drive. I took it out because i just built a new computer and i put the 250gb one in the new comp. Now this dell computer is acting weird
