Hi,

Went on vacation, came back, developed film. Downloaded Kodak Easyshare for my CD film. Now I seem to be having problems with the computer. It's acting funny! Different things keep "not responding" I end task and then it's working okay for a while then starts acting up again. I ran Hijack but don't have a clue what I'm looking at! Anyway I hope I did it right to post. I ran AVG and Adaware and then rebooted before I ran the test. Could someone look and see if everything looks alright? Thank you.

Hi bonfire. Welcome back to GTG. I see our staff has cleaned you up several times in the past. :tazz:

Please run hijack this again and post a new log here. Also,

* Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Hi,
Thanks for replying. Trying not to sound too much like a dummy here but before I download something I like to know why and what it is I'm downloading? I have a very old computer and she tends to be tempermental with me! I'm not even sure I did the Hijack right, did I? So you are wanting me to do both the Hijack and this Silentrunning thing?
Thanks

Yes, please run hijack this again. You may have picked up additional infections since the time you first posted. Also, the silent runners thing tells me what is silently running on your computer. Goes a step further than hijack this in revealing what is going on to some degree.

I didn't download the silentrunning thing, after I tried to it told me I need to download something else to go with it and I wouldn't be able to remove it if I wanted to, so I decided I maybe shouldn't do it. But here is a new Hijack.
Thanks

Please set your system to show
all hidden files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all programs and all windows, leaving only HijackThis running. Please disconnect from the internet. Place a check narj against each of the following, making sure you get each one and not any others by mistake:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.iwon.com/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.tcnuts.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = The Computer Nuts
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CriticalUpdate] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wucrtupd.exe -startup
O16 - DPF: {E9348280-2D74-4933-BE25-73D946926795} (DeviceEnum Class) - http://h20270.www2.h...cdetection3.cab

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wucrtupd.exe -startup
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

Let the system reboot.

Please reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look to see how we did.

Hi,
The 1st one "iwon" is my home page. The 2nd & 3rd is my IP carrier. I just got DSL Verizon today and got it installed. Had to install NIC to get it to work. My computer is windows se 98 and didn't have it to run DSL. Now I don't know what to do about my IP carrier that I had, should I put the disk back in and delete it from the computer? Before I do what you ask you need to let me know about this first.
Thanks

I wouldn't have anything titled iwon as my home page. IMO

I don't follow the rest of what you are asking.

www.iwon.com is my homepage, I like it. RO and RI was my internet carrier. I just got DSL from Verizon on Friday. SO now I need to take all the stuff out from "the computer nuts" also as "tcnuts". Do I just go in and delete all the stuff from my old internet carrier? I'm not really understanding how to close all progams and windows before I do anything you have asked me to do. I really am kind of dumb when it comes to this stuff. Sorry!

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.tcnuts.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = The Computer Nuts

Please give me a new hijack this log and please run silent runners and post the results.

I really do not see anything glaring in your log. You may just have programs interfering with each other. But I need to see the silent runner's log.

Hi,
What ever had been going on with the computer seems to of fixed itself after a friend came over and installed an NIC card and hooked up my DSL. I don't know what was wrong but it's been working fine ever since. I wanted to thank you for all your help.

Cool beans. Since this topic is resolved. It will now be closed. If you are the topic starter and would like it reopened, please PM a staff member.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  • Weather Watcher - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
