Hi there,

A random Norton message popped up today informing me I have a virus called bloodhound.w32.ep on my PC, but said it couldn't remove it.

I have run Trojan Hunter but it didn't find anything.

Please download SmitRem.zip

• Save the file to your desktop.
• Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.



Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:

• Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
• Follow the prompts on screen.
• Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
• The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Post the log file from Smitrem as well as a new hijackthis log.

Okay here is a new HJT log. Before I post it though, I need to mention that since running smitRem, my PC has been painfully slow, especially when trying to browse the internet. It can take up to ten minutes for my PC to respond when I try to open anything up, especially IE, and it takes even longer to load pages. I get ‘not responding’ messages at the top of my browser for a long time. Any ideas why this may be? I’ve had no problems like this in the past, and it’s definitely not my internet connection.

Smitrem didn't find anything to fix, so all it really did was create a log file. So I think the timing is just a coincidence.

Lets check some settings on your system.

• Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
  
• Then right click on your Default Connection
  • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
• Left click on Properties
• Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
• Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
• Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

My network connection settings were okay.

I ran the Winsock thing and it doesn't appear to have done anything.

I tried running cmd and every time I do it closes the window and says "the CPU has enoucountered an illegal instruction" which I'm taking to be a bad thing.

Let's take a closer look at what's on your computer.

Download WindPFind

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.
