Hi Again! I've been re-infected with the wonderful malware Winfixer2005. I've done a new adaware SE scan, and an AVG scan...it found 2 "trojan horse generic CNM" files and deleted both. Here is my hijackthis log.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

I followed your directions and when I tried to run the .bat file this text showed up in a text file and the program closed: "Not compatible with 9x or windows nt"

Nope, nothing you did. I gave you the wrong directions. Please download L2m9xfix from one of these two locations:
GeeksToGo
Noidea.us

Save it to the desktop and run it. Extract the files, and then open the l2m9xfix folder you just created and run RunThis.bat.

A window will open, and your desktop will disappear, then reappear. Please be patient until the batch says it is completed.

Then please restart your computer, and post a new HijackThis log as well as the entire text of the log.txt file which should be in the same folder as RunThis.bat.

Ok, it didn't seem to find anything. How do you know you are infected with Winfixer?

Because I had it 2 weeks ago, and the windows keep popping up asking me to install winfixer2005, when I say no, another window pops up, when I click that one off, a 3rd window with an advertisement for Winfix pops up. Same 3 windows, several times throughout the day whenever I'm using IE. My system is running slow again, and when I do a ctrl/alt/delete the system file doesn't show up, and I'm unable to do a defrag. These were all the same issues I had before greyknight helped me get rid of it last week. I've isolated (I think) the problem...of why I keep getting it, my husband was opening his netzero email account on this computer. He also has it now on his office computer.

Is WinFixer shown in your Add/Remove Programs screen?

No, it's not. To my knowledge it's never been installed.

Ok, based on a suggestion from Attribune, let's try this a different way. Restart your computer and as it first starts to load click the F8 key until it allows you to choose the Boot to DOS option (not sure of the exact wording).

Once in DOS, type the following command at the prompt:
del C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WVWTT.DLL

Then hit enter. Restart your computer into normal mode and let me know if the popups persist.

Ok, I did that and it said "no file found". I'll use it for awhile and see what happens, and try to do a defrag on it in a bit. I'll let you know.
