Hello all,

Recently started getting Winfixer popups, and didn't really think anything of it until yesterday morning when my system decided not to boot with a corrupt registry. After spending a few hours restoring the registry, I got myself back into XP and decided to eradicate anything and everything infecting my system, which was running Norton (up-to-date) as its only virus protection, and I had run spybot a few times as well.

So I went through all the steps you recommend plus a few, and ran a few of them twice: Cleaned temp files, ran adaware, cwshredder, spybot s&d, ewido, Trend AND Pandascan, TrojanHunter, Windows Update, as well as Microsoft Antivirus Beta, Norton, and a few others. Finally I ran Norton's Vundo and VirtuMonde fixes. Took all [bleep] day. Most of said programs found a few infected files and cleaned them up. By the end, everything was coming up clean.

EXCEPT - every time I start IE, Ewido raises the alarm that VirtuMonde is infecting my system, in a file called awvtr.dll in windows\system32.

I can't delete the file, no matter how I try. Please help!

Also, just curious - does this virus/popup do anything malicious? In other words, is it safe to continue using the machine to track finances, etc?????

Before starting any cleaning steps, please disable the Microsoft Anti-Spyware real-time protection:

• Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware tray icon by your clock (it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye).
• Click on "Security Agents Status".
• Click on "Disable real-time protection".

Next, open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

• Click on the Options menu, then Settings.
• Select "Real Time Protection" from the left column.
• Uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents" and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection".
• Click the Save button.

Finally, Right-click on the MSAS tray icon, select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware", and click "Yes" in the dialog that comes up.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

Please first save these directions to the desktop as a text file, because you will need to copy and paste part of them later, once we are in Safe Mode.

• Please download the Killbox.
  Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.
• Run HJT and fix the caxchg.exe entry again. (O4)
• Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.
• Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.
• Select "Delete on Reboot".
• Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
• Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

Reboot your computer into Normal mode and then post a new HJT log.

Ok, I didn't give you the correct instructions for the Vundo removal, so let's try those again. Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Before starting any cleaning steps, please disable the Microsoft Anti-Spyware real-time protection:

• Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware tray icon by your clock (it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye).
• Click on "Security Agents Status".
• Click on "Disable real-time protection".

Next, open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

• Click on the Options menu, then Settings.
• Select "Real Time Protection" from the left column.
• Uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents" and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection".
• Click the Save button.

Finally, Right-click on the MSAS tray icon, select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware", and click "Yes" in the dialog that comes up.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat

No sir, cannot see it. (am showing hidden files, system files, etc) It does show up in c:\!Killbox on a search though.
