Hi panther23 and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

2. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

Hey Trevuren,

thanks for your help :-)
Here is the new logfile (I have installed Hijackthis on C:\Programme\hijackthis, because I have the German version of Windows).
I hope you can find the bad one in the list...

Regards,
panther23

Hi Panther23,

First I would like to say that we are sorry that we did not respond sooner to your post. There have been some major server malfunctions and your response was never forwarded to me or even logged among my active cases. Our problems should be cleared up by this weekend.

Your system is currently infected multiple manifestations of the VUNDO trojan. When this happens, only one is active at any given time. To fix the problem, we must run the VUNDOFix as many times as there are Vundo manifestations, once for the active one, then, when the first has been killed, we run it as often as required to kill its replacement. Don't be alarmed if you are still getting popus during or after the first fix. It is just the other trojans taking over, but only for a short while :tazz:

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxwt.dll

  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\twxyb.*

This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxwt.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: byxwt - C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxwt.dll

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Trevuren,

cool, tuvur.dll seems to be gone =)Thank you very much =)
But there is another file which I think to be suspicious because it has a strange name - what do you think about:
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {79A576C4-B7A9-47EC-B57C-2CE5CA6ECC6A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhgf.dll ...?
Here are the logfiles etc.

regards,

panther23

From post # 5.

It is just the other trojans taking over, but only for a short while

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhgf.dll

  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\fghkj.*

    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {79A576C4-B7A9-47EC-B57C-2CE5CA6ECC6A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhgf.dll
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxwt.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: byxwt - C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxwt.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkhgf - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhgf.dll

Please do not forget to post the sesults of the Active Scan. I need them to see how many bugs you still have.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Trevuren,

here are the desired listings... =)
There is always a small problem after I run HiJackthis...after it, I can't see the bar where the "Start"-Icon and the other icons are..."Ctrl+Alt+Del" doesn't work, too, so I have to turn the computer off by pressing the on/off-button on the computer for 5 sec...does this have an influence on the cleaning?

Thank you very much for your help and many regards,

panther23

In this particular case, it should not affect the outcome.
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {79A576C4-B7A9-47EC-B57C-2CE5CA6ECC6A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhgf.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxwt.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: byxwt - C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxwt.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkhgf - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhgf.dll (file missing)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)
