Hi,
Nortons antivirus keeps picking up that C:\Windows\System32\wininet.dll is infected with the Alemonde Trojan. I've followed all instructions and it can not be deleted, not in a normal scan, not in safe mode as advised by Nortons/Symantec...

I think this infection is opening me up to other stuff as well as each time I run a scan (using Nortons and the downloads this site recommends ) different threats are found and removed, only to show up again as soon as I get back on line.

How can I get my computer back? Any help would be appreciated!

I've followed all the steps as closely as possible, it's been hard going downloading (my pc becomes less responsive as Nortons keeps detecting the infected winnet.dll, and has also been sending out quite a bit of data as well, further slowing downloads). I've attached the log whic was run after performing cleans using each of the programs I was successful in downloading, Nortons seems to be the only one picking up on wininet.dll though.

There's been an update in the situation! I've succeeded in deleting and replacing the infected the wininet.dll file! I found some instructions on a DELL FORUM. Unfortunately I'm still not clean of all infections, Ewido keeps picking up PS Guard but can't successfully remove it. My PC is still not what it was. Attached is the updated log if you wouldn't mind having a look, Nortons is experiencing problems now which I'm about to try and investigate further

I see you are using "Spyware Detector". It is on Spyware Warrior's Rogue List so I recommend uninstalling it!

Please click: Start--> Control Panel--> Add or Remove Programs--> Uninstall (if found) any instances of:
Spyware Detector

Then reboot your computer.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
  • Click the Free Trial link under to "SpySweeper" to download the program.
  • Install it. Once the program is installed, it will open.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
  • Once the definitions are installed, please close the progam.
If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:

O2 - BHO: BHOPopupSmasher Class - {702EA91C-1ACF-4772-8078-18F2B2EE1031} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\BlockActivex.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemTraySD] C:\WINDOWS\System32\SDSystemTray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MonitorSD] C:\Program Files\SpywareDetector\SDMonitor.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SDAutoLiveupdate] C:\WINDOWS\System32\LiveUpdateSD.exe -AUTO

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Make sure all hidden files and folders are visible (Instructions )

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Find and delete these files (if they are still there):[/b
C:\Program Files\SpywareDetector <= this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\LiveUpdateSD.exe <= this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SDSystemTray.exe <= this file

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

  • Run Spyware Sweeper
  • Click Options on the left side.
  • Click the Sweep Options tab.
  • Under What to Sweep please put a check next to the following:
    • Sweep Memory
    • Sweep Registry
    • Sweep Cookies
    • Sweep All User Accounts
    • Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
    • Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
    • Sweep for Rootkits
    • Please UNCHECK Do not Sweep System Restore Folder.
  • Click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.
Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt (C:\smitfiles.txt) log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

----------------------------------------
Make sure all hidden files and folders are visible (Instructions )

Please go to this site: http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top you'll find "File to upload and scan".
Browse to the next file, submit it on that site and let it scan:

[b]C:\PROGRA~1\SOFTWA~1\soproc.exe

Folders and files with a tilde '~', means that there is a file/folder that starts with the six characters in front of the tilde, note that there may be spaces in the name. If there are more than one, please report them back and do not delete!

Several scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans back here.

DICK, YOU ARE A LEGEND!

Followed your instructions on first attempt I was attacked as soon as I exited safe mode and opened IE to run the panda scan. I then ran a scan using ewido which detected them but unfortunately it crashed without saving a log, likewise with HJ, they were 'backdoor' virus detections and suspect cookies from recollection.

So I started again from scratch and this time there were no attacks! I came back with a clean bill of health from panda and virruscan, I've had IE open for a few hours and there's been no signs of attack, previously I'd been getting detection notifications literally as soon as I connected.

Below are the HJ logs, ewido & spysweeper & smitfile text. Hopefully all is as well as it seems :tazz:

Spysweeper takes for evere to start up, Task Manager shows it as not responding for 60 seconds or so before the Spysweeper pop up properly displays and then disappears- is this normal?

Can you offer any advice on how I can remove Nortons & Microsoft antispyware, their live updates fail and 'windows installer service can not be accessed' for these 2 applications?

So many questions I'm sorry, but what real-time protection app/apps would you recommend I have running?

THANKYOU SO MUCH DICK!

To uninstall Microsoft AntiSpyware and Norton:

Please click: Start--> Control Panel--> Add or Remove Programs--> Uninstall (if found) any instances of:
Microsoft AntiSpyware
Norton

Then reboot your computer.

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winqta32 - winqta32.dll (file missing)
After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Then reboot your computer.

Make sure all hidden files and folders are visible (Instructions )

Please go to this site: http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top you'll find "File to upload and scan".
Browse to the next file, submit it on that site and let it scan:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\viewers\ezspp.dll

Several scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans, along with a fresh HijackThis log, back here.

Hi,

Thanks for the continued help.

When I try and uninstall Microsoft AntiSpyware Windows Installer or Nortons I receive the following message

'The Windows Installer could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed.'

I'm not in safe mode and the installer has no apparent problems uninstalling other applications.

Followed the HJ instructions - could this have affected Spy Sweeper as when I rebooted I received a message 'Spyware was damaged, please reinstall'? I uninstalled through add/remove, restarted and then reinstalled from the setup download, same message comes up though unfortunately.

My system still seems susceptible as I connected earlier when importing a cd to itunes, didn't even ave a browser open and ewido detected msconfigx32! Repeated all previous instructions and all seems well enough again.

Submitted the ezspp.dll file as advised and these scans came back as clean.

Thanks again for all your help :tazz:

You need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and following the prompts. You are running Windows XP so get updated to SP-2.

Then reboot your computer.

Again go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and following the prompts.

Reboot again.

Probably the problem is solved now!

Thanks didom,

I've updated to SP2 and this seems to have resolved my application errors. By all reports my pc is clean and running quite smoothly.

Thankyou for all your help, my pc would probably be smashed into itty bitty bits by now if it weren't for you and Dick. It's been a painful experience but at least I've learnt a lot out of it, thanks again and you keep fighting the good fight!

Cheers,
Pat
