Agreed to install a DVD burner for a friend. Started up the machine and signed into the main user account (this is an XP machine with several user accounts) which has administrator privileges. The first thing I see is an alert stating that AVG update failed. The AVG icon in the taskbar was greyed out, so I tried to check for updates manually and got the same error with a message stating that the installation may be corrupted and a suggestion that I download and install again. I figure I'll do that, after I get the drive going.
Installed the hardware with no trouble, but went to install the corresponding software and got an error from the InstallShield installer saying that the engine (iKernel.exe) could not be launched because access was denied.
I figured now was a good time to try the AVG install. I uninstalled completely (although there was a warning at the end about access being denied (again?)) then downloaded the latest version of AVG and tried an install. The installation completed with a warning -

I had, of course, confirmed that the user had administrator privileges, so I was puzzled by all of these messages about access being denied.
Doing some poking around the web for possible answers, I got the impression that my troubles may be caused by viruses/spyware/malware. After checking with the owner of the machine and confirming that it was OK for me to remove anything I might find in order to get the DVD burner's software installed, I went straight to the Trend Micro online scan, installed Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D and scanned, because I use those a lot on my own machines. Then I went through the other suggestions in the topic on what you should do before you post a HJT log here.
Each of the programs found a few things.
Even so, I am still unable to update the InstallShield engine, install the DVD burner's software via the InstallShield interface, and I'm still getting unsuccessful update message from AVG when I try to check for updates.
