Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. You have a mixture of malware and the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection, together with ConHook. With that sort of luck don’t bother buying lottery tickets and be careful crossing roads.. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

hmmm i guess you didnt see that my keyboard and mouse quit working if i go into safemode??? i tried doing everything in regular mode.. and it didnt work... i apprecaite your help by the way!

Apologies, I should have stated and forgot to, but the fix will work in normal mode as far as the Vundofix and HJT fix.

I think that now is a good time to run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

It would appear from the error message that there is more than one identity with Admin rights or that your identity doesn't have Admin rights.

Hello again Shane

I must admit this behaviour is very strange. These are the two options for safe mode: During a boot, keep tapping the F8 key and choose Safe mode from the advanced menu or go to Start>Run>type in Msconfig>hit ENTER>Boot.ini and check off SafeBoot>Apply, reboot.

If you boot to safe mode and a black screen, press ctrl alt and delete at the same time. Click on file then new task(run...) In the Open box type msconfig and press enter. If msconfig opens click the boot.ini tab at the top then uncheck /SAFEBOOT Then click on the general tab at the top and make sure Normal startup is checked. Click Apply then Ok The computer should now prompt you to reboot. Hopefully you will be able to get into normal windows now.

I want you to try an automated Ewido scan. Here are the instructions.

Download:
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido Security Suite.

• Install Ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
  • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.[list]
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
• Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
  
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Now close Ewido security suite.

Hello again

Some thing is amiss here, and I can’t see it. Let’s try something else.

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from Process Explorer

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from KillBox

Then boot up in SAFE MODE

the rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll 's under winlogon click OK.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll then click the kill button.

Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00DBDAC8-4691-4797-8E6A-7C6AB89BC441} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljjk.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljjk - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljjk.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqro - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ssqro.dll

Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.

Now run KillBox and paste this line below into the box, select delete on reboot then press the red X Button, say yes to the 1st prompt But NO to reboot now

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll

Then on KillBox top bar, press tools/delete temp files and follow those prompts and say yes to everything

then let it reboot

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

Once again that didnt work but heres what i did... a friend helped me out.....


boot into safe mode by pressing f8 at the bios splash screen

navigate the the files.

right click on them select properties

click on security tab

click on advanced button

uncheck the box that says "inherit permissions from parent directory" or something like that

click the remove box when it asks you what to do with said permissions.

click add button. type in your user name.

deny all permission even system... its still there but nothing can access it. it seemed to work

my pc is running good now.

basically i went in and made it so nothing could access the file. went into the administrative rights, turned all permissions off... even to SYSTEM and it cannot run anymore... so it is there, but nothing has permission to access it or start it.. not even itself. my friend is a network administrator so walked me through how to do it ... anyway here it is, you will see it is still there but it uses NONE of my system resources anymore. it doesnt even start up... i just cant remove it now
