OK, my wife evidently downloaded some spy/adware. After going through all the steps I found the Look2Me adware and finally got it removed.
Now, however, the system seems to be dumping memory. After a bit of time, I begin to get the "insufficient system resources" error as well as the "application could not initialize" (or somesuch).

Here is the hijack this logfile:

The standard steps as outlined in the "before you post.." section (supposedly CWShredder would handle it, but it didn't). In addition, I found a site that had a removal tool. I believe it was symantec's:
http://securityrespo...er/FxSpL2Me.exe

At least that's what I still have on my computer.

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
  • Click the Free Trial link under to "SpySweeper" to download the program.
  • Install it.
  • Once the program is installed, it will open.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
  • Once the definitions are installed, click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log

what I'd like you to do is perform a system file check

go to start > run > type cmd and hit enter

in the black box that appears, type sfc /scannow and hit enter

this will spawn a window. Let it scan, and provide the windows CD if it asks.

once it has finished, reboot and see if the problem persists
