Hi there.

I hope someone can shed a little light on what may or may not be a problem.

My pc has been running perfectly (apart from the odd malware infection) for over 18 months now.

Twice in the last week, when no other programs were running, I've got the dreaded Blue Screen Of Death.
The one which says it's doing a physical memory dump. :)

The only way to overcome this is to reboot the machine, then everything seems ok.

Is this something I need to worry about, if so, what can I do to try and eliminate the problem.

I've not seen this since the days of running Windows NT at my old place of work.

I'll say thanks in advance for any help you can give, so - THANKS!!! :tazz:

A couple things that I need to know. What is your OS, and what exactly is the blue screen message you are getting? There are many kinds of bluescreens out there.

Also, it would be helpful if you could post what hardware you have.

Sorry guys & gals - I didn't think to write down all that it said.

I guess I'll just have to wait until it happens again, make a manual note of it then post it here.

Thanks for the quick response!! Fantastic.

start > run, type
eventvwr.msc
<enter>

Look under systems and applications for items with red Xs that happened at the SAME time as your problem...list them here.

Forgot to say that I'm running W2K/SP4, on a 2.4 GHz P4, 512Mb DDR.

Where to look for Systems & Applications?

Sorry mate, I'm being really stupid now.
Where's the event viewer - is this something specific to XP? 'Cos I'm running Windows 2000

I suppose I should read the replies properly!!

Right - run event viewer, System log is clean, Application log just has 2 yellow warning triangles - no red 'X's'

Does this help?

Thanks in advance again!

WinMgmt

Going back through the log, there seems to be a least one of these appearing every day, sometime 2 or 3.

There were some red X's a few days ago (27/10), these were all against Microsoft Internet Explorer, and they all record the User as N/A.

I have tonight actually abandoned Internet Explorer and began using Firefox. But I don't think this can be the source of the problem as, like I said, it happened a couple of weeks ago when I was still using IE6.

From you saying you had a bluescreen but your logs being clean, I'm wondering if you have it set to write an event to the system log when errors happen...

Just been through the system log again - 1 error on 27/10 - Print Error, event number 6161.

Is this of any use to you? I guess what it does confirm is that Error events are being written to the log.
