Hi, my PC has just recently started to click and power itself off if I try to run too many programs at once. At first I thought that this was caused by my hard-drive but I just replaced that a few days ago and the problem has started again. If you know what causes this i would appreciate your feedback.

Hey, and welcome, I see it's your first post here.

First off I'd need to know what hardware you are running and the power supply you are using. Also, is it a spontaineous reboot or is it completley shutting down? Also, I'd like you to check the event log- [Go to control panel > Click Administrative Tools > Click Event Viewer] From the three things on the left, do you see any red X's under the system tab that have the source as system error?

Motherboard: Gigabyte 8IPE1000P-G
Processor: Pentium 4 3.0ghz
Power Supply: ATX Switching Power Supply 350w
Hard Drive: Maxtor 260 gb 6L250S0
Ram: 512 DDR-SDRAM PC2700 (166 MHz)
DVD-RW Drive: ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16
CD-RW Drive: SAMSUNG CD-R/RW SW-252F

It just shuts off, no windows shut down and no restarting and there is nothing that i can see in the event log.

Okay, one thing I forgot to ask is that when you boot back up after it, do you see a dialog box that pops up saying "The system has recovered from a serious error." ?

I'd just like to know that to rule out some sort of critical error causing it.

Download a monitoring software like Everest or Speed Fan, run the computer and load it heavily with runnnig programs. At the same time check cpu temperature in one of these monitoring programs. It is very possible that your computer shuts itself down, due to overheating. This is an important safety feature aimed to protect the cpu from damage.

Another theroy besides that may be that your power suppy is faulty and is not putting out the required amount of power.... Two reccomendations would be to strip the computer down to just what's nessecary to run, then run it for a while and see if it shuts down like it's been doing, or possibly try a different power supply if you had acess to one.

I have been over your everest report and the only thing out of the ordinary is the cpu temp, everest is reporting it at 84C and thats extremely high.

Could you go into bios and get the cpu temp there so we can double check?

Check the heatsink to make sure it is not cloged with dust and clean with a can of compressed air if necassary. Becarefull not to invert the can keep it upright so liquid does not spray out.

The volt readings the psu is putting out seem normal at the time of the everest report this does not guarantee the psu is totally good it just means it was producing the required voltage at that time. Sometimes a flaky psu will produce good volts on the rails most of the time then randomly either under or overvolt on one of the rails thus causing a random reboot. This situation is hard to pinpoint or test for the best way to trouble shoot is to swap in a known working psu.

I would trouble shoot the high cpu temp first before trying another psu, if no dust build up exists you should replace the thermel compound on the cpu heatsink thius is of course if the bios temp reading confirms the everest report.

If you determine you need to replace the thrmal compound post back for tips/instructions.

Looking at your Everest printout: cpu temperature is awfully high at 84c. Voltages looks good. You must reduce cpu temp to avoid safety auto-shut.

1: Open the computer case and see if the cpu fan is rotating freely. very often it is not. It's a vital part, not expensive, and if in doubt replace it with a new one.
2: check that the ribs of the heatsink are not clogged by dust and clean with compressed air or brush.
3: Check that other fans in the system work freely (power supply unit and other fans, if available).
4: remove the heatsink from the cpu and clean its bottom from any cooling paste or cooling pad. Do the same with the cpu top. The surfaces must be very clean. Apply a VERY VERY thin layer of cooling paste on both cleaned surfaces and reinstall. Make sure that the heat sink sits properly in its place and is properly secured.

Hey guys, thanks for all your help. Cleaned out all the dust and applied some thermal paste to the cpu and it is working perfectly. CPU is running at 40 C (104 F) now and I can't seem to get it to shut itself off now no matter how many programs I run. Thanks again for all your help, it is truly appreciated.
