I've scanned using spybot, ad-aware, etc. and it still keeps coming back. I'm using norton internet security 2006, so I have a firewall and all that stuff. I get these System alerts that say I have spyware, when you click on them they just bring up a pop-up window that says you should buy this anti-spyware program, I checked that list of fake spyware programs and the ones they advertise for are on the list. Also my IE homepage is changed and wont go back, its correct in the internet tools menu, but never goes to that page. Please :tazz: Thank You to the staff at Geeks to Go! You guys are awesome. Heres my HJT log and thanks again for the help.

Dear KazeDreams, :tazz:

I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program (i.e. Norton Antivirus and avast!). This is very dangerous, as multiple AVs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. I strongly suggest you either (1) configure only one antivirus program to enable automatic realtime scanning, and leave the rest disabled most of the time, or (2) go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program.

Dear KazeDreams, let me know in detail if you have already uninstalled the avast! antivirus software application, or what antivirus software you decided to uninstall.

Yeah I had Avast on my computer for like a week after I reformatted, then I bought Norton and uninstalled Avast, so as of now I use Norton, along with spybot and ad-aware.

VersionCueCS2.exe - C:\Program Files\Adobe Version Cue CS2\bin

the others didn’t show up in the search.

Heres my HJT log, thanks again for helping me with this

Dear KazeDreams, :tazz:

Are you sure that the file "VersionCueCS2.exe" was located here: C:\Program Files\Adobe Version Cue CS2\bin
or here: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS2\bin.

If the file was located here: C:\Program Files\Adobe Version Cue CS2\bin
then copy the file to here: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS2\bin

In addition your hjt log was cut off.

Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log.

Note: Dear KazeDreams, be careful when executing these posts, I want you to do these posts correctly and if it takes time to do these posts then so be it. In other words, take your time to do these posts, so you do them correctly.

Sorry about that, I was rushing and forgot to type the first \Adobe. But I searched again and it is the file location you had. - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS2\bin

And here is the new HJT log. Sorry again for the screw up.

Dear KazeDreams, :tazz:

I would like to see a list of your NT services that is running on your Windows XP operating system.

Look at the following article: http://www.mvps.org/...02/services.htm.

I would like to see the information in the "tasklist.txt" that is created in this article in your reply to this post.

Look at, "How To: Determine what Services are running in WinXP" and "To save the onscreen info:" from this article.

okay, when i type the command in the command prompt, a message comes up in the window- 'tasklist' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file . Oh! I see it says this on the page - You will see all the Services running in process. (XP Pro only), i guess it only works with XP pro, I'm only running home...

Dear KazeDreams, :tazz:

(Ok, no problem - we will just proceed with this post.)

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
******************************

Please download and run a Free Trial of Trojan Hunter at http://www.misec.net...rojanHunter.exe. Please restart your computer.

Please run the Housecall online virus scan located at: http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp. Follow the prompts to scan your hard drive for viruses. Select the "Autoclean" option so that Housecall will remove any viruses from your system. When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.

Then please run the Panda scan here: http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm. Delete any viruses found, and restart your computer.
*******************************

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-Aware SE at the following link: http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm

Restart your computer.
*************************

Go to Start -> Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok. Scroll down and find the below service/services:

avast! iAVS4 Control Service (or aswUpdSv)
avast! Antivirus
avast! Mail Scanner
avast! Web Scanner

When you find each service, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, under the General tab click the Stop button, then click the drop-down box to change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.
*******************

Run HiJackThis. Click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

aswUpdSv

Click ok.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES.
********************************

Restart your computer.

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O23 - Service: avast! Web Scanner - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe" /service (file missing)

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

Dear KazeDreams, :tazz:

A discussion before my next post

Dear KazeDreams, looking at your log this line still remains in your log after being fixed:

O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {e9ccf15d-4c68-4b5a-9e9a-8e12e4bd39bd} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp7464.tmp

Note that the file, hp7464.tmp, is a random file, that is, it usually takes the form of "hp****.tmp (i.e. where the astericks represent random characters). When you run the HijackThis application be aware of this, look for this file and remember its name, that is, write it down on a piece of paper, because after you fix the line in HijackThis, I want you to delete this file. Note that this random file changes after each computer reboot/restart.

Now, as for the line:

O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {e9ccf15d-4c68-4b5a-9e9a-8e12e4bd39bd} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp7464.tmp

This represents the "SmitFraud" virus, my next post to you is a "canned" speech on how to get rid of this virus. Wait for my next post.

Dear KazeDreams, :tazz:

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
**************************

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
