Hello -dle and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable CounterSpy and Winpatrol from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

When your PC has been declared clean, please only enable one of those two programmes to run in real-time. All others should be used as “on demand” scanners. Having more than one antispyware programme running in real-time will cause slowness and even conflicts.

Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter once.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\system32\qrqss.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.iwon.com
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqrq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the programme then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Phil - I will run thru the process this evening when I get home. To answer your questions about access. The PC is configured for multiple users. I have admin rights associated to my login acct. Should I use my acct or the "admin" acct when I give it a shot? Only my acct and the admin acct have admin rights.

Hello again

Please operate under the logon that produced the HJT log.

When that profile is clean, I'll look at the others and clean them too.

Should you have difficulty getting into safe mode, run the fix in normal mode, it will wor. I prefer safe mode for fixing since there are fewer drivers and applications loaded and therefore fewer to go wrong.

Phil - Attached are new log files. I made a typo (systems32 vs. system32) when I ran the vundo fix the 1st time. I renamed the original output file and re-ran the cleaner. Both log files are attached.

I have a "small" problem. The "CleanIt!" process deleted everything in my C:\temp folder. I had sveral files, possibly 100 or more, stored in that folder. Do you have an undelete utilty to recover them?

Thanks

Hello again

Quelle catastrophe! You could try this: http://www.officerec...m/freeundelete/

Your HJT log looks rather good, but we need to tidy-up a little.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqrq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Hello!

- Attached (below) is the latest hijackthis.log logfile.

- :tazz: Unfortunately the tool that you provided was unable to assist me in recovering the files that I need. It did allow me to undelete a significant amount of files, but for some odd reason the c:\temp directory and it's contents did not get restored to my external USB disk when I undeleted everything that was on the list of folders available for restore. I'd be interested in any other options that you can suggest.

- For reasons that are unclear to me, I am unable to visit www.iwon.com using IE and see the normal website. I get there, but it doesn't appear correctly and most of the normal stuff is missing. If I use Netscape it appears normally. Would you know if any of the fixes that I ran adjust IE settings?

Thank you for your help!! :) :)
Dennis

Hello Dennis

There are some good progammes out there. Try this link to Kelly's: http://www.kellys-ko...m/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll down to number 36. When you use these programmes, they have default settings for searches. Ensure that the settings include JPG or BMP or whatever type of file you lost.

I can't help you with iwon (http://www.iwon.com/) I just tried it via Firefox and each time the operation timed out, I tried with MSIE and it was not detected, it might be their server. However...................

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

Happy safe surfing Dennis!

Phil,

Thanks for your help. While you won't be able to retire on it, I have sent you a token of my appreciation. Enjoy a pint or two on me. Take care and again, thank you very much for your help. I could not have done it myself.

-Dennis

PS. While I hope not to need your or any other "Geeks" assistance in the future, if I do - I hope that they are as helpful and competent as you are!
