It seems that I am also suffering from Virtumonde, and possibly others too. First picked up by Norton Antivirus. I have since run Ad-Aware SE, CWShredder, Spybot S&D, Ewido (report attached below), Trend Housecall, Activescan and TrojanHunter but still getting the pop-ups for WinFixer and WinAntiSpyware.

HiJack This and Ewido logs follow.

Hello Simon and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a little malware and the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable Ewido Guard from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Open Ewido and remove the guard option and reboot normally.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter once.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnk.dll
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\system32\knnmp.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnk.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [_WinMain] C:\WINDOWS\winmain.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmnnk - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnk.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the programme then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Thank you for your advice however a cursory look at the new HijackThis log does not bode well.

As requested I disabled Ewido Guard before doing anything.

In Safe Mode I was faced with a black screen and the only way I could run the programs was through Task Manager. After running KillVundo.bat I ran HijackThis where the two pmnnk.dll files were marked "(file missing)". I still selected both, and the other files, and fixed the checked items. However after closing both programs the only way I could reboot was to turn the computer off at the tower's switch.

I then ran Cleanup, following which ActiveScan did not find anything. The HijackThis log follows:

Hello again Simon

That log looks exactly as it should, nothing to worry about there. In fact the fix works OK in normal mode too but I always favour safe mode as fewer applications load and therefore there are fewer things to go wrong.

We have a few adjustments to make:

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnk.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [_WinMain] C:\WINDOWS\winmain.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmnnk - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnk.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Download:
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
  • In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
  • Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\WINDOWS\winmain.exe
  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Reply with a fresh (final?) HJT log please.

Hello again,

Thank you for the continued help. I think we are getting there but as I was about to post the HJT log another window opened so I have re-run Ewido and also attach that too.

Hello again Simon

Please delete your temporary files.

Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start >My Computer)

You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the bottom of the fly out window.

On the very first tab (General) you will see a button labelled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.

Make sure the following are checked:Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Next, go to Start>Run>type in %temp% hit Enter and delete the content of all the temp folders shown (only the content, not the folder).

Now that you have done that..................................

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

Happy safe surfing Simon!

Thank you very much. I will get hold of Spyware Blaster to supplement the others, which I already had.

Just one more question. Do I also delete the jusched.log and kb.log contained in the main Temp folder after typing %temp% ?

Thank you once again.

You are very welcome to the help.

It's up to you if you want to keep those logs, but I wouldn't bother.

I will leave this thread open for a few days in case of misfortune.

Thank you very much. She has rebooted and there don't appear to be any problems.

You certainly deserve the title Superhuman in my eyes!

Hello again.

I'm afraid that my system seems to be more infected than we first thought. After completing all the previous advice I was still suffering pop-ups, although less than before, with Cassava being the main proponent.

Norton Antivirus picked up Spyware.Apropos.C with the following files:

c:\windows\system32\asad3d9.dll - could not be deleted by Norton but I deleted it in safe mode
slskey01.exe - deleted by Norton

Since this I have re-run all the "Start Here" scans with Ewido picking up one cookie:

---------------------------------------------------------
ewido security suite - Scan report
---------------------------------------------------------

+ Created on: 10:48:28, 04/11/2005
+ Report-Checksum: 44D9956

+ Scan result:

C:\Documents and Settings\simon\Cookies\simon@com[2].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Com : Cleaned with backup

::Report End

Despite rebooting after cleaning the system with Norton and Ewido the pop-ups keep returning. Any ideas?

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:AproposFix
Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Hello Simon

I look forward to hearing the verdict.

Me too!!

The reason I say that is, Apropos has no tell tale signs anywhere. According to its author, a member of staff here, Swandog46. He says that the only give away is sometimes an entry in the Add/Remove called ContextPlus. These are his comments:The rootkit is installed by many common malware bundles including an IST package and one of the Pacimedia installers, so if you see a very infected log that likely came from one of these bundles, containing (for example) Elitebar, SurfSideKick, PowerScan, SurfAccuracy, Qoologic, exp.com, WinTask, 180searchassistant, CMSystem, etc., then you should probably run the tool to check for this rootkit.

Well the tool certainly found it and dealt with it. Let me know if its gone - wait 24 hours.

BTW, your HJT log is still clean.
