Hello amyjoan and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and the SpySheriff infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Download NoahDfear's smitRem.exe©. and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark or tick next to each of the following items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
O2 - BHO: ICOODManager Class - {465A59EC-20E5-4fca-A38A-E5EC3C480218} - C:\Program Files\ICOO Loader\addons\icoou.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [leeman] C:\WINDOWS\system32\leeman.exe
O16 - DPF: {88D758A3-D33B-45FD-91E3-67749B4057FA} (Sinstaller Class) - http://dm.screensave.../sinstaller.cab

Click Fix checked

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\ICOO Loader\addons\icoou.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\leeman.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Open the smitRem.exe©. folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop and post in to me in your reply.
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let me know if any problems persist.

Hello again Amy

Daniel's profile is clean.

There is an adjustment to make on Dave's profile:

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://speedbar.ask....search.html?p=4

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Logon with your own profile (with administrator's rights) and run this:

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

hi again,
well i did the things you said to do in the last post, and here is the log from winpfind. thanks!
talk to you soon. amyWARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hello again Amy

There are four bad gys in the WinPfind log. Let's deal with those firstly.

Download:
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
  • In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
  • Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DQUnzip32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DQZip32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Shreder.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SuperMenuHook.dll

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Please post a fresh HJT log for Dave's profile and also an Uninstall Log:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post

Also update me on how your PC is behaving.

here are the log files you wanted. i used the kill box program as well. the computer is getting better but still isn't as fast . dave said he got error codes yesterday but didn't remember them. he will write down any others he gets from now on,. i haven't had that problem though. are there any of these programs i should use regularly to prevent this from happening ? once again, i thank you for your help and how fast you get back to me. i think it is very nice for you to do. amyjoan

Hello again Amy

The last HJT log for Dave was clean. The uninstall list only showed 3 possibilities of programmes which have been known to be troublesome at some time in the past, which doesn't mean that they are now. They are Bearshare and the two Limewire programmes.

I am close to the point where I say your problems are not malware, but I think I ought to suggest a 48 hour period for you to assess the recent changes made and give you a chance to log any errors.

I hope you agree and I will here from you in two days or so.
