Hi there,
I have the Winfixer virus and possibly a few holes in my system I should fix. I've been through everything on your 'Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log...' page, but I still have the same problems. I would be eternally grateful for some help.

Here is my Hijackthis log:

Hi Simon232

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {65E9801C-0472-47F9-85A0-8442D47A82B0} - C:\WINDOWS\Registration\bass.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://software-dl.r...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
Use windows search facility if you have trouble finding these files.

C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE

After that, Reboot.

Please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new [b]HiJackThis log
in your reply.

Hi simon232

Just one more item to delete

Download and install CleanUp!
Close cleanup, we will run it later.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5LP_0001_0614] "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\MRG74BP5\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe"

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, if it does go ahead and reboot.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :)

Rats.

When I try and remove 'O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5LP_0001_0614]....' I get the following message:

Unexpected error occurred!
Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(exe”.exe).

I hope there's a way around this!

Hi Simon

1. Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type "regedit" without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘export’ in XP. Export the file to your Desktop.

If a restore of the registry is required in case of emergency only, just click on the exported regfile on your desktop, and answer YES to the question whether you want to merge this file with the registry. Wait until you get a message saying something like Merge Successfull.

2. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste everything in the codebox below into the new document, including the word REGEDIT4. Go up to "File Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop as fixme.reg.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"NI.UWFX5LP_0001_0614"=-

3. Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully."

4. Reboot your computer.

3. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

I would also adivse removing Spycatcher from your system via add/remove, I will recommend more trustworthy antispyware software once you are clean.

Hi Simon232

Congratulations! Your log is CLEAN :tazz:

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. (To replace spycatcher)
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visitmonthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scannersweekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Andy :)

Once last thing, Andy, can I now remove those exported regfiles you instructed me to create from my desktop? I don't want anyone else clicking on them and it causing unnecessary complications.
