My friend's computer is very slow right now, and warnings about trojans from AVG have been popping up constantly. In addition, his internet is giving him problems. It is saying that it is connecting to a site, then the site switches, and then changes again, and so on. But it never connects. Firefox is just as troublesome. It doesn't connect at all. He has AVG, Ad-aware, and Spybot.

Here's a HijackThis log, as well as my own analysis at the end.

This is what I found to be bad, but I didn't completely research the Rs and the O23s:

O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Windows System32] winsys32.exe

To fix this problem, fix these entries in HJT and reboot in safe mode to delete the corresponding files...correct? Afterwords, when the internet is fixed, run some online scanners such as Kaspersky and Trend Micro...correct? Did I analyze it correctly, with the correct solution? Did I miss anything or is there anything else to do?

Download Killbox DO NOT RUN IT YET

Boot Into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Potential Uninstallations
Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:
Viewpoint Manager

Stop NT Service

Part1
  • Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Locate the " MStmpServ " service and double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
  • Click the Stop button.
  • In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
  • Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
  • Close the Services window
Part 2
  • Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Copy/paste the line below into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key:
  • sc delete mstemp

My friend did everything up to the Kaspersky Online scanner. He couldn't do it because his internet still isn't working. I gave him Killbox on a floppy, so he was able to do that. Here's a fresh HJT log:

For his connection:
Download WinsockFix http://www.greyknigh...sockFix.sfx.exe and uncompress it.

Then double-click on the uncompressed file to run it. Click "Fix Winsocks" and then when completed it should reboot the computer. Let me know if that helps at all

Nope, doesn't help. He just went wireless and just switched to a cable connection about 2 weeks ago. He said he'd try some things, and if he continues to have problems, I'll go over and check it out. I cleanned his computer about a month ago, which wasn't much work. He keeps it pretty clean.

We'll handle it from here. Thanks for your help. If we continue to have problems, I'll start a new thread. :tazz:
