Hello budas and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Please read this article on Spyware Nuker 2004: http://www.spywarewa...re.htm#swn_note

You appear to not have any antivirus protection.

Download
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION

Install AVG and scan the whole of your PC.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter once.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\Drivers\Intel\binsvc.dll
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\Drivers\Intel\cvsnib.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the programme then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hi phil,

Thank you so much for the advice and i will be working on it tonight as soon as i get back from work. Yes i have another profile on my laptop. Is this gonna present any problems? I also have administrator rights. i want to let you know that i had tried to work on this yesterday according to similar help that you guys have been giving other people but when i tried to open killvundo.bat it said that an important component was missing and that i had to download it again. i tried several times with the same result , thats when i got frustrated and registered with the forum thnking that my problem might be different from all the others. What do you think.

I know you are not superhuman but thanks a whole bunch for even offering your help. i appreciate it.

No problem with the other users, just work on your normal profile and when it is clean, I'll check the others.

Discard any previous downloads of VundoFix, always use a fresh one. The author, Atri a brilliant man, may have been making changes to the tool.

Hopefully, you'll soon be clean, but you've got to have an AV programme continually running.

Hi phil,

I downloaded AVG and scanned my computer and it found about 60 virus infection with a mixture of several trojan horses and the Lovgate Worm. Any idea what the best tool is out there to combat these things? i never knew my computer was that sick. Thanks for all the help.

You've got it; antivirus systems backed up with one antispyware in real-time and others for on-demand scanning.

You've probably been infecting others for ages without knowing it.

I can't wait to see your HJt log, I bet its like having a new PC. :tazz:

Hey Old Bloke,

You are absolutely awesome. I still can't believe my computer was that infected. Since i finished doing everything i haven't had another unnecessary pop-up but i don't want to get too excited yet. **very important**: When i tried to do the fixes in safe mode, i kept getting this error message that an improtant element of vundofix was missing and that i had to go download it again and reextract it. It happened so many times and out of frustration i finally tried it in normal mode and it worked. I don't know what you think about this but here is my Hijack Log now:

Hello again

I need to see the logs requested, especially the vundofix.txt.

Just one item in HJT showing up.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Comm] C:\Program Files\Win Comm\WinComm.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following folder, and delete it:

C:\Program Files\Win Comm\

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Please post a fresh HJt log also.

Hi Phil,

Sorry for the long silence. I got caught in a huge projectatwork and haven't had the time to concentrate on this issue here. I finally got to it today and did as you directed. Here is the log fie:

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

BTW, yes we do get the donations, it is not a spam.

Happy safe surfing!

NB - If you have to use this service again, please turn off word wrap in Notepad; it scatters your HJt log and makes them even more to read.
