Hi, thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

I followed the instructions for Malware Removal prior to posting this. Adaware and Ewido are continually finding a slew of infected items which is why I decided to come here for help. Some of the items found regularly include Quick Web Search, Only the Best, SearchClick, Cool Web Search, and 123 Search. Additionally, there are two programs that show up in Add/Remove Programs but not in the main Programs folder - "Shopping Wizard" and "Home Search Assistent." "Assistent" is spelled as it shows up in Add/Remove Programs. My browser has also been hijacked and there is something masquerading as a virus shield on my toolbar which I can't shut down. I'm running Windows XP Pro and MS Office 2003.

The Hijack This and Ewido logs are below. Again, thanks in advance for your help.

Hi tlvharmon
Welcome to Geeks to go

Ensure Ewido is fully updated.
Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open Ewido
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido security suite.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log along with the Ewido log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :)

Hello tlvharmon

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

You have a CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK

Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (If present).

After that, Reboot.

Then, please run this online virus scan: [b]ActiveScan

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log along with the activescan log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :)

Hi again, Andy.

I've got MS Office 2003 which appears to have a possible conflict with Cleanup 4.0

Is Cleanup 3.1 acceptable to run under the instructions you've outlined?

Thanks,
Terry

Hi

I have office 2003 and have had no trouble, however not all machines are the same. For the time being use windows own disk cleanup utility, Start--> All Programs--> Accessories--> System tools--> Disk cleanup, and place a check next to the first five items.

Hi, Andy.

I followed your instructions, including using Disc Cleanup instead of "Cleanup." Unfortunately, about:buster did not leave me the option of saving a log file neither of the 2 times I ran it. The first time, it removed two files but I did not copy the names down. The 2nd time, nothing was removed. When I ran CWSShredder, it removed one file: "Removed following (1) variant: CWS.Qttasks" Also, ActiveScan kept locking up my PC so I had to abandone it.

As far as PC performance, Symantec VirusScan was freed from whatever limbo it was in, but my internet homepage is still set to about:blank and I'm still getting the "Only the Best" popups.

My most recent HijackThis log is below. Once again, thanks for helping me with this.

Hello tlvharmon

Ok we need to use the tools we have and hit this infection in one go.

please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, if Ewido guard is running please disable it before procedding with the fix, it should not be but please check.

Please run CWShredder, and click Fix.

Then please run About:Buster and click Start to begin the scan. If prompted to end the Explorer.exe process, click Yes. Your desktop may disappear --- this is normal. Allow the program to scan twice, and when complete click "Save Log". This will create a text file called "AB Logfile.txt" in the folder where About:Buster is saved. I will want to see this logfile later.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the log from the scan for me. Do not have any windows/programs open for the duration of the scan.

Finally, please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Then please restart your computer in Normal Mode, and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the logs from AboutBuster and Ewido.

Hi, Andy.

Really, really sorry for the delay in posting. I was called out of town on business this past weekend.

Its looking good!!! :) It started out nasty but then turned out just fine.

I ran CWS Shredder in Safe Mode. The program ran to completion but then I got a blue screen with lots of text, some of which read, "A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated" and "Beginning dump of physical memory. Physical memory dump complete." My PC then rebooted on its own. I restarted in Safe Mode and continued with your recommendations.

Once again, AboutBuster did not give me the option of saving a log, but this time I received an error message "Component 'comctl32.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." AboutBuster did remove the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ansft.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\olkwy.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmpux.dat

Finally, I ran Ewido, saved the log and restarted normally. I've been checking pretty extensively and there are no more "Only The Best" popups and I was able to reset my home page without it being hijacked!!! Also, there aren't any programs masquerading as a virus shield on my toolbar anymore!!! Thank you!!!!

The only things that appear to remain is the "Home Search Assistent" anomaly which is only visible in Add/Remove Programs and has no real option to remove. I'm assuming the program associated with this has been deleted. Is there any way to remove this listing?

Anyway, here are the Ewido and HijackThis logs. I'm hoping you'll tell me my system is squeaky clean. Thanks very, very much for all the help!!!! :tazz:

Hi tlvharmon

Great job :)

Firstly do you know what this refers to? am.omron.net

Good news only one entry to get rid off.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: Class - {EB7B542C-EDCA-207F-69DC-B1DC63AC3AF6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\addcw.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Then reboot

Just to be sure everything has gone please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log

A for your add/remove entry, open HJT and click config in the bottom right of the screen.
Then click Misc tools.
Next click the Open uninstall manager.
Locate the Home Search Assistant entry and click Delete this entry
It should now be gone :)

Hi, Andy.

It's continuing to look good!!! No problems whatsoever. :tazz:

To answer your question about the unknown entry, it refers to a website of one of our customers.

I easily removed the "Home Search Assistent" entry using HiJackThis as you recommended. Thanks!!!

I re-opened HiJackThis, scanned and "fixed" the entry you had listed previously. After rebooting, I ran ActiveScan. After finishing, the program stated "No viruses or other malicious software have been found!" There was no report to save. Lastly, I ran HiJackThis again. The log is posted below. I'm hoping it shows that everything is cleaned out.

Once again, THANK YOU!!!!!!

Hi tlvharmon

Congratulations! Your log is CLEAN :tazz:

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visitmonthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scannersweekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Hi, Andy.

I reset System Restore and added the programs you recommended. Everything continues to operate smoothly. I didn't realize just how bad the situation was until everything was cleaned out. Now it's like I've got a brand new PC again!

Your assistance has been absolutely invaluable. Thanks for your time and all the help!!!! :tazz:

Very best regards,
tlvharmon
