Having major problems with my computer. Most notably when I start in normal mode error occur in McAfee Firewall, MSN messenger, and I can't start IE, Outlook express, or numerous other programs. In safe mode I'm basically ok except there is a BHO installed that keeps changing my homepages.

I also have a file called mszx23.exe in my windows\system32 folder that I can NOT delete either in safe mode or regular mode. It says it's being used by another person or program.

It's really irritating! I really hope you can help! I have run TONS of programs including Spybot S&D, AdAware, and Spyhunter (to name just a few). Here is my log in safe mode (when I first started up, no programs or windows open):

Hey y2. Welcome to gtg. :tazz:

Uninstall teatimer for now. It is difficult to fix your computer with that running. You can add it later if you want.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. ;)

AHHHHH!

I did what you said and now I don't have English on my computer. All of the Windows related font reads as symbols. For instance Jasmine shows up as: a rectangle, a checkmark, ?, a backwards c, a small dot, a big dot, and a checkbox. I am only able to see English in some spots of websites and some programs. But, the writing seems a bit larger.

Here's my log (safe mode again). Oh, and i'm running a TrendMicro scan.

OK. Everything that we fixed in Hijack This shouldn't have caused this. Give me a minute and I'll get back to you. I hadn't seen this before...but are you getting a lot of unwanted, graphic pop-ups?

Nope, no popups. Everyonce in a while my browser will change to the horseserver/redir and then ask me to install "fun games" via a popup window. Then, I occasionally get directed to a p***-type website regarding virgins.

Thanks for all your help by the way. :tazz:

I also did a websearch, a few actually regarding mszx23.exe and was not able to find anything. Also I looked for horseserver.net regarding spyware and again came up empty. :tazz:

OK. Coming up empty on horseserver also. Very little out there. Probably a browser hijacker.

I want you to turn off system restore for now:

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

(Turn it back on after we get it cleaned up)
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

How to Turn On and Turn Off System Restore in Windows XP
http://support.micro...kb;en-us;310405

You have a number of randomonly named files on your system. We like to start with an online virus and trojan scan. Even though you have antivirus software on your system, it can become corrupted by malware.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and we'll remove what's left.

Ok, System Restore was already off. I turned that off yesterday before I started scans with spybot, spyhunter, etc. just incase.

I have download the cleaner and it's going ok I think, hard to tell with the jibberish characters. I think I even managed to update it though :tazz:

The trendmicro scan is running also.

Thanks again.

Just run one scan at a time. Run the housecall or one from Panda also.
