My computer hasn't been working "properly" for a few weeks now. It freezes after only a few hours of operation. Freezes as in, I am unable to run any programs or surf the internet (I use IE v. 6.0 with SP2). It will perform fine once I reboot, only to freeze again a few hours later. I (oh so stupidly) downloaded Zango in order to play a tetris game on the internet. I will never knowingly do this again so please, no reprimands :tazz:

I followed all the instructions on "Malware Removal". The only part I was unable to complete was the installation of SP1a. The error message I had stated that it could not be applied when SP1 had not been installed. I am surprised it isn't there because from the time I took my computer home I had enabled automatic updates and installed everything that was suggested. I have SP2 - unfortunately from the minute it became available, as was suggested by Automatic Updates (in the Malware Removal instructions you state I'm not supposed to install it until I follow all instructions and remove all malware from my computer). The following is my log from HijackThis:

Hello Sherry and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Is this your ISP : Stentor National Integrated Communications Network (STEN) 110 O'Connor St. Floor 3 Ottawa ON K1P-IH1 CA ?

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please also disable Ewido Guard for the same reason. Open Ewido and remove the Guard option.

When your PC has been declared clean, please only enable one of those two programmes to run in real-time. All others should be used as “on demand” scanners. Having more than one antispyware programme running in real-time will cause slowness and even conflicts.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:
CCleaner
Ad-Aware

Install Ad-Aware and launch it, ensuring that it is updated first of all..

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan:

Launch the programme, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.

Click the 'Scanning' button.
Under Drives, Folders and Files, select 'Scan within Archives'.
Click 'Click here to select Drives + folders' and select your installed hard drives.

Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
Click the 'Advanced' button.
Under 'Log-file detail level', select all options.
Click the 'Tweaks' button.

Under 'Scanning Engine', select the following:
'Unload recognized processes during scanning.'
Under 'Cleaning Engine', select the following:
'Let Windows remove files in use after reboot.'
Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.

Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT to allow it to finish.

Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look.

I'll check back frequently to see what you have to say....

Thanks, Sherry

PS - My ISP plays a part in this? I'm not sure what it is. Aliant in Halifax I thought but I can't be sure. Please let me know how I find out and I'll let you know.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

The bit about your ISP is that according to your HJT log at the 017 entry, the IP address is for the company mentioned. It sounds legit but I normally just check to ensure you aren't being hijacked there. I would be worried if the IP was for a commercial company in Nigeria, so that's why I check them.

I wish you happy safe surfing Sherry!

GOSH - I can't believe it was that easy. At first all the steps seemed insurmountable - I think because I wasn't familiar with a lot of them. You gave great instructions - easy to understand and well explained.

Thank you Phil, so very much!

Take care, Hugs, Sherry :tazz:

I left my computer on all night - ran adaware this morning and it found 3 tracking objects, which I removed. I was unable to connect to IE or open anything on my desktop. Something is still not right. I'm going to go through the steps again *Malware Removal*.

Is it okay if I post another HijackThis log after I finish?

Not a problem Sherry, but to save some time and since your PC was clean, why not just run this very powerful scan?

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

Phil, this is what the scan found. I'm trying to do this quickly because IE keeps "encountering a problem" and closes on me.

Looking forward to your response.

Thank you....Sherry

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hello Sherry

WinPfind found some bad guys lurking on your PC, some had been there a while.

Download:
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
  • In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
  • Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\3fj0ri6f.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\4g7tkpvo.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ab754ee8.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\bsc4m0jl.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hgctbkg3.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Mtyocjk1.xml
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Plmcusk1.xml
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\s72d61hc.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\TdABS273.dll.tcf
C:\WINDOWS\p1J7k

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Any better? Wait 24 hours before answering.

I waited not quite 24 hours. I didn't have to, when I got up this morning and tried clicking on Internet Explorer I received an error message: " C\ProgramFiles\InternetExplorer\iexplore.exe Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service ".

I tried going to program files (through the "my computer" icon, which I was able to open) and opening it from there - same error message.

I tried clicking on other programs such as Spybot, Adaware, Cleanup - same error message as for IE.

I went to Start\Shutdown and no window came up to let me choose to restart, logoff, shutdown.

At this point my computer froze and I was unable to click on anything. I let it sit for 10 minutes to see if it needed to catch up - still frozen. Even the clock's time was frozen. I shutdown myself by holding in the start button on the computer. It restarted with no problems.

Also, no matter how high I set my popup blocker (Google popup blocker) I still get one that comes up no matter what page I'm viewing on IE - "Search the Web". I'm not sure if this has any significance but wanted to mention it just in case.

I haven't run any cleaners, antivirus or adware programs yet - I wanted to wait until I heard from you.

Phil, you have amazing patience to have stuck with me thus far :tazz:

Quelle catastrophe! Nil desperandum!

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runner's.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
    • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Please do a fresh HJT scan and send me the log also.

Thanks

Hello again Sherry

The Silent Runners log is negative and your HJT log remains clean. There has been a spate of rootkit infections in the past couple of weeks, let's try that next.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:AproposFix
Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.
