After doing a repair installation of Windows XP Professional, desktop icons for my many of my programs are showing up as unrecognized by Windows (the "generic" icon). Is this normal?

It is unusual

Click start, all programmes, right clic a programme, click send to, send to desktop, create shortcut

Check the shortcut appears correctly and works, then left click the generic one for this programme then delete it, check the new icon still starts the programme

You might see a change if you run a system file check

Open the CD ROM Drive used to install Windows, insert the XP CD but leave the drawer open. Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter, then close the CD ROM Drive drawer, You will get a blue progress bar, after the bar goes, reboot. This will check for and replace missing or corrupt system files.
