Frequently when booting up the computer the cursor arrow does not appear near/at the end of the process. The numlock light does not come on either so that is about the point things hang up. This happens about every other time I boot up. Usually on reboot, it gets through the process (through the "you didn't shut down properly so we will check for errors" detour) The arrow and/or hour glass appear several times during the process before this happens. I don't know much about start up but there are some things running at startup like the wiindows Office Bar. This Wdo 98 SE machine has never been reformatted. I'm sure some programs have been removed incompletely.
Help please. Thanks :tazz: java script:emoticon(':help:')

You may have some malware. :tazz:

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log as a new topic in the Hijack This forum. It will get a better response there from the people most qualified to analyze logs.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide. Also see this post.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

I'm in the middle of something right now and wont' be back for several hours.

Read this post and see if there are any similarities.

http://computercops....nt-1-16001.html

Also, do this:

You have a number of randomonly named files on your system. We like to start with an online virus and trojan scan. Even though you have antivirus software on your system, it can become corrupted by malware.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and we'll remove what's left.

Download Ad-aware from: http://www.geekstogo...n=download&id=5

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file
  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives
  • Scan Active Processes
  • Scan Registry
  • Deep Scan Registry
  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
  • Scan my Hosts file
  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
  • All of your hard drives
-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
  • Include additional process information
  • Include additional file information
  • Include environment information
  • Include additional object details
-> Click the Tweak button and select:
  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
  • Use Custom Scanning Options
-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

-> Reboot your computer.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic. :tazz:

In response to your requests:
1. Housecall. antivirus will not download for me. It can't find the netscape plugin file even though I browse to e (several times).
2. I went to moosoft.com. I can't figure out how to do a free scan. It just takes me to a purchase the program sequence as far as I can tell.
3. I will attach a new hijack run below.
4. I installed adaware before, per your original direction but will procede to run and amend the set up per your latest note next.
Then what do I do after that?

Thanks for your continued help

I re scanned using adaware following your directions. Several of the choices you specify are not available. Ex : Include additional process info" is not a choise. nor is "Include additional file info: nor is "Include add'tl object details. In scanning Engine, "Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile" is not a choice. Nor is " Include add'l Ad-aware settings in logfils" Under Cleaning Engine: "Let Wdos remove files in use at next reboot " is not a choice., but "delete quaranteed objects after restoring" is chosen.
Then I rea the scan.
It does not ask "Save the Settings" and does not show how to do so.
Nest: I don't understand YOUR directions about removing (what?)
or deleting (what/where) TEMP files and "offline content."

Then, do you need yet another HiJaak run?

Help Help

Thanks for your patience.

Hi, After doing alll the above, I turned of the computer and it won't shut down. It gets to the Windows screen that says Windows is now shutting down" and hangs at that point. Note that there were a lot of windows updates I did yesterday but it shut down after them. The only thing I did today was to re-run the ad aware thing.
I do remember that when these WDO''s 98 machines were new, there were some that had the"won't shut down" problem. Would alll this scanning activity somehow nulify that old fix?

Help Help

Thanks,

I downloaded a bunch of windows updates in succession a long time ago on my 98. The computer crashed, but that computer was a very, very bad computer.

Try the free online scan from Pandasoftware. You will need to use IE to download it. And then post another log.

Do you use sidestep? It used to be considered adware, but I noticed they took it off of that list. It was meshed with other baddies, but not any more. If you don't use it, I would remove it via the add/remove programs.

Run Hijack This and put a check mark in these boxes.

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadQM] loadqm.exe
(Description: This is the Microsoft MSN Queue Manager. There is disagreement over whether it is spying on you or not. Nevertheless, we suggest you check this entry and remove it. Removing this entry will free up some system resources. more information)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpsysdrv] c:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe
(Description: HP monitoring tool. Unnecessary. Remove this to free up some system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TCASUTIEXE] TCAUDIAG.EXE -off
(Description: 3Com NIC Installation/Diagnostic MFC application. Diagnostics may be run from the Start -> Programs. Unnecessary. Removing this entry may free up some system resources. )

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe
(Description: Checks for updates to MS Works. Unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up some system resources. )

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(Description: RealPlayer scheduler. Completely unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mdac_runonce] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\runonce.exe
(Description: Associated with MS Data Access Components (MDAC). Sometimes left over after installation - not required. NOTE :- don't delete "runonce.exe". )

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Taskbar Display Controls] RunDLL deskcp16.dll,QUICKRES_RUNDLLENTRY
(Description: Only appears in MSCONFIG if you have a Display Settings icon in the System Tray allowing resolution changes on the fly. Can also be disabled under Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced -> General. Also appears if you have Win95 with the QuickRes "Powertoy" installed. This is unnecessary and can be removed to free up system resources.)

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office Find Fast Indexer.lnk = C:\MSOffice\Office\FINDFAST.EXE
(Description: Complete utter waste of space! Part of MS Office - searches disk drives for Office file types and creates an index to make opening them easier. Removing this entry will free up a significant amount of system resources. )

reboot, and post a new log. :tazz:

Hi
Below is the new log

I did Not delete
O16 - DPF: {640B39C1-D713-464F-92C3-75BD972B95EE} - http://download.side...00719/sb028.cab
Or
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Taskbar Display Controls] RunDLL deskcp16.dll,QUICKRES_RUNDLLENTRY
(Description: Only appears in MSCONFIG if you have a Display Settings icon in the System Tray allowing resolution changes on the fly. Can also be disabled under Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced -> General.

We do use sidestep occasionally. So is it ok (should I stlill) delete 016...... anyway?

Ref 04... I like to be able to change screen resolution in order to read the small stuff on the web or to run old kiddy (grandchildren) educational pgms like reader rabbit.

Ref your comment "Also appears if you have Win95 with the QuickRes "Powertoy" installed. This is unnecessary and can be removed to free up system resources.)" I'm not sure what this is and don't see iit in programs. Where / what do I look for to delete?

Finally, (almost) I still experience my original problem. i.e. lose the arrow at thevery end of Startup. What to do?

Thanks so much for your help

Is your anti-viral up to date?

Please do this:

1.) Terminate the DLGI.exe process through the task manager.
2.) Use the search tool to find DLGI.exe and delete it!
3.) Use the search tool again to find Iadhide3.dll and delete it!
4.) Remove any start menu related items to this.

Run Hijack This and put a check mark next to these:

O4 - Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\BackWeb\BackWeb\Program\backweb.exe

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = c:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Installer\{00030409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}\misc.exe

Reboot and see how it's working. If it's still not doing well, I have used this program in the past. It's called ccleaner and you can get it through www.majorgeeks.com. You might try that. :tazz:

Hi

Thanks for the response

1. I am just loading the latest Norton Anti Virus. I took all anti virus stuff off before starting this process with you because of its supposed interference with other programs.
2.My computer (and I) don't know what "Task Manager" is. (WDO's 98 SE)
Help/Find does not find DLGI.exe or Iadhide3.dll
WHAT AM I MISSING ABOUT YOUR DIRECTIONS?

Should I go ahead with the HiJack stuff without doing the above?
