I've read through alot of things on here before deciding to post this in hopes of avoiding a system re-install. Here goes:

I was infected with a bunch of adware/spyware/malware programs all of a sudden last week. I searched everyone where online and found a bunch of things that had infected me, and removed them all - they included things like:

"drsmartload"
"Ist" (not the full IstBar, but the backend .dll installed itself - it's removed now)
"msresearch"

that's all I can remember. Anyway, after numerous scans with spyware/adware removers, I've supposedly cleaned everything, however I still get popup ads, and yesterday my machine rebooted itself cold for the first time ever since I've had it running nearly every business day for 3 months (This is a work machine, and I usually shut it down every night). I'm assuming it's related to the resent infection. Just some info: the popups always come in waves - a few right after I boot up, and normally a few a few hours later. They're always in a menuless IE window (even though I ALWAYS use Firefox, never IE).

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have what appears to be a VX2 infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

But before we do that, you appear not to have any antivirus protection. We must remedy that immediately.

Download: AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION Install, update and scan the whole of your PC before proceeding further.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Ah, yes, I go in and out of using a full-time virus protection. I scan very regularly with housecall antivirus, usually a virus & spy/adware together. In any case, after last week I do it daily, and the spyware checker comes up with new adware cookies every day (obviously linked to the popups) but no "programs" installed. I can send the scan results if you want, but they're rather uninteresting.

Is this free virus scan very reliable? I have had system problems due to full-time virus scanners in the past, which is why I'm wary about them today.


This is a multi-user computer, however it's me 99% of the time. That means little of course because the other user's accounts could be infected. What does that change for the hunt process? In any case I am the computer administrator, so permissions aren't a problem.

Hello again Nathan

Trust me on this one, you do NEED an AV on your PC providing real-time protection. I have seen a virus hit a PC and within a millisecond, that PC can no longer function. AVG is very good and always rates highly in tests. It is free for home users but pay for for commercial use.

The VX2 infection on your PC is confirmed.

Close any programmes you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Extra note... after reboot and logging in, normally a screen will pop up and perform the rest of the fix and notepad opens automatically afterwards.
If that doesn't happen, you'll have to do it manually, so open your L2M-folder which is present on your desktop and doubleclick second.bat.
Let it run and notepad (log.txt) will open then. Copy and paste the contents of it in your next reply with a new hijackthislog.

Good morning

I'm afraid that my French is very rusty; just out of practice I suppose. My last visit was at Easter 1999 and for my troubles I had a month of mal de debarquement, which was the precursor to the Meniere's Disease.

The HijackThis log (HJT) is created when you do a HJT scan.

It's a snapshot of parts of your registry that tells me what is where. Always run a HJT scan in normal mode.

Can I see the latest please to ascertain if VX2 has all gone. The latest strain is very persistent

VX2 is till present, which doesn't surprise me; it is very persistent.

Staff members are working on automating a tool to remove it, but it is not ready yet. The manual delete is very complex and time consuming.

The good news is that Webroot has just released the latest version of SpySweeper, which you are free to trial for 14 days, and it kills the latest VX2.

Download the Trial Version Spy Sweeper it is a 14-day trial.

• Install it.
• Once the programme is installed, it will open.
• It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
• Once the definitions are installed, reboot into Safe Mode. Re-open Spysweeper, click Sweep Now on the left side.
• Click the Start button.
• When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
• Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
• It will remove all of the items found.
• Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
• Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
• Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.

Reboot normally

And a fresh HJT log please.

That spysweeper is pretty nice, I may have to buy it.

Just one thing, after I rebooted I looked in the "sheild" section of the settings, and in startup there was an "unknown" entry, and I could find no details about it. I disabled it. Everything works fine after a reboot...

You are correct in your assumption, and yes we got it. Just a bit of tidying to do, and what would really please me, would be for me to see AVG in your list of running processes in the next HJT log.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: Nls - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfutil.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot normally.

And a fresh (final?) HJT log please.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.
