Hi!
After updating and scanning with my anti-virus program, then updating and scanning with ad-aware SE, spybot search and destroy, and microsoft's anti-spyware beta 1, i still find myself with the same trouble. My homepage is set to about:blank, and is continually changed to searchxp.com and other related sites. I am also plagued with related popups.

Reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu) and follow these steps:

Step 1:

Click on start, then control panel, then administrative programs, then services. Look for a service called Network Security Service (NSS). Double click on the that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.

Step 2:

Step 5:

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware.

Go to Start>Run and type regedit.

Press enter.

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\%AF夶À¨

If %AF夶À¨ exists , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

Now navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_%AF夶À¨

If LEGACY_%AF夶À¨ exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

If you have trouble deleting a key. Then click once on the key name to highlight it and click on the Permission menu option under Security or Edit. Then Uncheck "Allow inheritible permissions" and press copy. Then click on everyone and put a checkmark in "full control". Then press apply and ok and attempt to delete the key again.

Step 6:

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.

When it completed move on to step 7.

Step 7:

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
Save this file on the desktop

Reboot your computer back to normal mode so that we can see if we need to restore some deleted files:

If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here:

Download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start ,Run, type regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button.

If you are using Windows 95, 98, or ME it is possible that the malware deleted your control.exe. Please check for the existence of this file by going to to:

Examine where the file should be for your operating system. If the file is missing then download the appropriate file and place it in the proper place according to this information.

Open IE, go to Tools>Internet Options>then click on the security tab, then click on custon label. Check the following settings:

Download Signed ActiveX controls-set to Prompt.
Download Un-Signed ActiveX controls-set to Disable.
Initialize and script ActiveX controls marked as unsafe-set to disable.

Step 9:

Run an online antivirus scan at:

i've created fix.reg as instructed, but it will not merge. i get this error saying You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

ive opened up regedit again, go file->import, then navigate to fix.reg
and it prompts me with "the key will be restored on top of key: Uninstall. All values and subjeys of this key will be deleted. Do you want to continue the operation? y/n"

Well if you're comfortable with deleting a few registry entries manually then here's the instructions. This does the same thing as the registry merge.

Click "Start", "Run", type regedit click "OK".

Now click the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, click the + next to software, click the + next to microsoft, click the + next to windows, click the + next to current version, click the + next to uninstall and find the key named HSA. Right click it and click "delete". Now find the key named SE, right click it and delete it, the last one is SW delete that one too. Now close the registry editor and move onto step 8. All 3 keys:

HSA
SE
SW

Are found under uninstall

Download it to your desktop or somewhere you will find it. Extract the .inf file from the .zip file you just downloaded. Now right click "Deldomains.inf" and click "Install". It will not appear to have done anything, thats ok.

Reset your host file. Click Here to download HostsFileReader. To reset the host file to default, simply open the program, click the "reset default" button, and confirm the changes.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.
Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.
Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

Spybot Search & Destroy Download and install. Start Spybot S&D, Click the Search for updates button, if any are found then click the Download Updates button. After all updates are downloaded, click the Check for problems button. When the scan is complete, place a check next to anything marked in red, then click the Fix selected problems button. You may need to run Spybot S&D multiple times to remove all infections.

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:

• Automatically save log-file
• Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
• Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :

• Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
• All of your hard drives

-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:

• Include additional process information
• Include additional file information
• Include environment information
• Include additional object details

-> Click the Tweak button and select:

• Under the Scanning Engine:
  • Unload recognized processes during scanning
  • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
• Under the Cleaning Engine:
  • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:

• Use Custom Scanning Options

-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

-> Reboot your computer.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

Oh, Eraser is a program I use to permanently delete files/etc.

Try removing these 2 once more and also use Del Domains again. Reboot and post a new log.
