I am trying to fix my friends computer and she is running Windows 2000 based on NT technology and she is using AVG free edition and it keeps popping up and saying that C:\WINNT\system32\rdriv.sys is infected with Trojan horse Generic.GM and whether I heal, delete or move to vault it keeps popping back up again.

I have found a few forums that had supposed fixes and followed those instructions to no avail. :tazz:

I have run the following programs in both regular mode and safe mode

Adaware
Spybot Search and Destroy
Trojan Hunter
Ewido
CWShredder
CCleanup
Cleanup!
Trendmicro online scan
Panda online scan
and all windows updates are up-to-date
Also ran rdrivrem

I also went to bitdefender.com at one point and it said that there were trojan infections within C:\WINNT\system32\Lavan\KAHOL.exe - however those are not picked up by anyone/anything else.

Running firewall Sygate-which incidentally shows msdvd.exe continously trying to connect

I have installed Firefox in hopes that might help

I even tried renaming the rdriv.sys file to rdriv.old and something is recreating the rdriv.sys file over and over.

Below is the Hijack this log I have just run

Thanks in advance for the help
Angel :)

Please follow all instructions as specified. Print these instructions to ensure all are followed.

Please download the following programs, but do not run them yet:

* rdrivRem.zip
  • Unzip it to your desktop.
* Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed
  • After the updates are installed exit Ewido.
* CleanUp!
  • Install it.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight "Safe Mode" then hit enter.

1.) Please go into the rdrivrem folder and double-click rdrivRem.bat to run the program - follow the instructions on the screen. After it's complete, rdriv.txt will be created in the rdrivRem folder.

2.) Double-click the Ewido Security Suite icon to run the program.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "remove", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit Ewido
3.) Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
**If it asks if you want to reboot or log off press NO.

Reboot your computer into normal mode.

5.) Make sure your firewall is on. Make sure you can turn it off then turn it back on and that nothing is greyed out.
Also, Make sure your Anti-Virus program is working properly - you can turn on and off auto-protect, etc.

6.) Run this online virus scans (NOT at the same time!):
ActiveScan

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the contents of rdriv.txt, the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan, and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

First of all, thanks so much for your response!

Not that it matters, but I have actually done these exact steps (because I saw them in the forum during my search of the net on this subject), and I can tell you that the rdriv.sys file did not appear when in safe mode, only in normal mode). However, I realize the reports and logs are an important part of this process and want to thank you in advance for taking the time to look at them.

I will follow these exact steps Monday morning, when I am able to get to the problem computer, and will posts the reports and logs ASAP. I also realized I failed to mention that we had also tried Killbox.

Anyway, thanks again - I very much appreciate your response and help. I just wanted you to know I saw it, and that I cannot get to that computer until Monday.

Thats fine . Lets try these steps and see what happens. The tools get updated rather frequently so maybe we will have better luck, if not we will keep plugging away until we get it :tazz:

ok - all done with what you asked and for the record - it is still coming up :tazz:
Here are the reports/logs

rdrivRem.bat file - I did want to note that when I redownloaded this zip file and unzipped it, there were 2 other items that were not there last time - so maybe that's why it found it this time?

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below service:

microsoftdvdhelp or MicrosoftDVD

When you find them, double-click on each one. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked

Please go here: Jotti

Click the "browse" button and locate this file:

C:\WINNT\msdvd.exe

Click "Open", then click the "Submit" button. Copy the results and paste them here with a new Hijack log

1. Download "Registry Search Tool" (RegSrch.vbs) from here
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/

2. Start it and paste in rdriv, wait for it to complete the search, click ok at the prompt.

3. Then when wordpad opens, copy the content back into this thread please

Thanks

I suspected msdvd as a problem. I just have one question before I do this tomorrow...when you say "paste in rdriv", what exactly do you mean by that? Will it become more clear once I start the program? Paste from where?:tazz:

Thanks again

You will see when you use the tool. It may give you a warning about a script running , just let it run. :tazz:

Hello angel2infinity

Tell me Exactly what AVG is still flagging.

You can delete this file C:\WINNT\msdvd.exe

Run the Rdriv tool you downloaded earlier one more time and post the Text

Please do this:
Open HiJackThis
Click on the configure button on the bottom right
Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"
Copy and past the StartupList from the notebook onto your post

Thanks

Hi loophole

I just now managed to get back on the computer - sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner.

After doing the previous steps you requested and posting the logs/reports, I restarted the computer and AVG didn't bring anything up anymore - looks like the problem, for the most part, is gone. :tazz:
I will certainly delete the msdvd.exe file as well.

I was wondering though, (since essentially the problem is fixed), if you still wanted me to do the above quoted steps? If so, I probably won't be able to do that until Thursday as I have some family issues to deal with tomorrow.

Either way THANK YOU SO MUCH! It is SUCH a relief to not see AVG popping up anymore!!! :)

Great job, excellent response time and easy instructions - hats off to you and the rest of the site helpers! :)

Hi loophole

I haven't had rdriv.sys come up in AVG again, but today another file (I believe it was D2.exe) came up and I wasn't sure what to do so I moved it to the vault - however, when going to view specific info in the vault it wasn't there.

I decided to run Trojan Hunter and this is the results it gave

Registry scan
No suspicious entries found
Inifile scan
No suspicious entries found
Port scan
No suspicious open ports found
Memory scan
No trojans found in memory
File scan
Found possible trojan file: C:\WINNT\system32\Lavan\Libparse.exe (Suspicious: ASPack-packed file in Windows System folder)

SOOOO, I decided to go the Jotti site you had given me before and scan that file to see what came up and here are the results

I tried to do a search on what it found and came up with pretty much zero. When I saw that the file was in the Lavan folder I remembered that Bitdefender said it found some infections (I did this a week ago) in the Lavan folder and mentioned the file "KAHOL.EXE" and so I decided to scan that within Jotti as well and here are the results

I had tried to do a search (last week) about the Lavan folder and the KAHOL file and didn't come up with anything.

I am wondering if these are all related and/or if I need to start a new thread for solutions on these items?

Like I said though, the rdriv.sys hasn't come up again.

Thanks again and I apologize if I should have started a new topic.

Lets try this

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Thanks for the info etc. I will have to follow these steps Monday morning since the weekend is full, but I will post the results as soon as I am able.

I do have one question....one I was unable to find an answer to anywhere on the net and even emailed Microsoft (and never did get a straight answer). Is Lavan a legitimate WINNT folder? Is KAHOL.EXE a legitimate file? I was shocked that I could find NOTHING on both the net and the Microsoft site about either of these!

Talk to you soon
I appreciate the help
