I downloaded an attachment from my school server thinking it was from a ministry about an upcoming
trip to Mexico. It was actually just a virus. I scanned it with nortons antivirus and it didnt show as a virus.
After I downloaded I get a message on my computer that system files have been changed please insert service pack 2 cd (which I dont think I have) and my nortons had expired last week but I bought the 2006 version. when I try to install I get a "internal fatal error 2337" then eventually it stops the install and I get a 99999,171 error message. I did all the fixes that nortons told me to do and it still wont install. I tried to install AVG and McAffee's but both have fatal errors when I try to install them. I got ewido to install and it found 37 issues and I fixed them. This is after I have ran SPyBot search and destroy. I ran a ccleaner "crap cleaner" and it found 357MBs worth of junk on my comp and I got rid of it. Regedit will not run on my computer for some reason and I need to get my nortons 2006 to load somehow. for a while HLoader_exe.exe was trying to load but that has stopped. do I need to run ewido again for a report? Let me know if you see some stuff I can fix. Thanks.

Hey Elmo,

Go to Add\Remove Programs and Remove----> AdwareAlert

Download WinPFind:
http://www.bleepingc...es/winpfind.php

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Download Pocket KillBox from here:
http://www.atribune....ads/KillBox.exe

Highlight the list below and press Ctrl+C to Copy!

C:\windows\system32\antiav_exe.exe
C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert

Open Pocket Killbox-> Click File-> Click Paste from Clipboard!

Place a tick by Delete on Reboot-> Click the Red Circle to Delete!

Click Yes to the Prompts that follow and let Killbox Reboot the PC!

Reboot into SAFE MODE(Tap F8 when restarting)
Here is a link on how to boot into Safe Mode:
http://service1.syma...src=sec_doc_nam

Run those entries through Killbox once more to confirm its gone.

When you paste those entries into Killbox, place a tick by these selections

"Standard File Kill"
"End Explorer Shell while Killing File"
"Unregister .dll before Deleting"
"Deltree(Include Subdirectories)"

Click the Red Circle with the White X in the Middle to Delete

Open HijackThis and put a check by these but DO NOT hit the Fix Checked button yet!

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [auto__antiav__key] C:\windows\system32\antiav_exe.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\AdwareAlert.Exe -boot

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [auto__antiav__key] C:\windows\system32\antiav_exe.exe

Now Make sure ALL WINDOWS and BROWSERS are CLOSED and hit the Fix Checked Button!

Still in Safe Mode,From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder!

Restart Normal and post a fresh HijackThis log and the Results of the WinPFind Scan

Don't know if this will help. when my system boots up it says something like
invalide Boot.ini File booting from c:\system32

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

I have had a chance to run the file and have documented all the changes it makes, this could be a battle getting things back to normal.

Use Killbox and Delete this file

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\antiav_dll.dll

Place a tick by these selections after pasting the entry into Killbox

"Standard File Kill"
"End Explorer Shell while Killing File"
"Unregister .dll before Deleting"

For now,I need to know if you have your original Windows CD?

Next,I need to see a HijackThis StartUp List Log

Hijackthis StartUp Log:
Open HijackThis,Select Config(Bottom Right)>>>Select Misc Tools>>> Select Generate StartUpList log and make sure that both Boxes beside it are checked:

Put a check by:
List all minor sections(Full)
and
List Empty Sections(Complete)

It will produce a NotePad Page,I need you to post the entire contents of that page to the next post!

I ran AVG last night and it said disk read error in boot disk and other area.
It is saying boot.ini invalade and boots from c:\windows when I restart my computer. I THINK I HAVE THE Backups to my computer. I got some disk but I dont think it is the service pack 2 disk. I think it is just the OS disk. Here is what ya asked for.

See if you can locate the Windows CD and lets give SFC a run.

Insert the Windows CD into the main CD-Rom drive

Click Start>>Run>>Type in CMD and Click OK.

Type "SFC /purgecache" and click enter.
This will force Windows to purge its DLL cache and repopulate with clean system files!

Type "SFC /Enable" and click enter.
This will make sure that your OS has its System File Checker enabled!

Type "SFC /scannow" and click enter.
This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem!

If there are errors running "Scannow", these links may be helpful:

Restart after this and let me know if the boot problem is still occuring?

I tried to reinstall windows XP, when I ran it it stopped and gave me this error message.

Setup was unable to create, locate, or modify a critical file [ c:\boot.ini ] needed to start windows XP
Access denied.

Maybe this will give you an idea of the direction we should try to go next. Thanks for the help.

I guess thats why my computer not using it. I can come on this evening. sometime after 5 would be good if you want to hook up live. drop me a line and let me know when is good for you. Thanks for all the hard work you are doing.

Im sorry I was so late getting in from Work.

Im not 100% sure that change to Boot.ini is associated with the Bagle bug or not.

We are going to replace it anyways.

I have upload my version of Boot.ini-> Regedit.exe and Regedt32.exe.

Each goes in a different location,so please be sure to place each in the appropriate folder!

Please make a copy of the boot.ini file you have and place it in My Documents until this is all said and done.

Just in case,Simply right click boot.ini and select Copy-> Go to My Documents and right click inside the folder and select paste.

Boot.ini(Place in the C drive please)
http://webpages.char...onster/boot.ini

regedit.exe(Place in the Windows folder please)
http://webpages.char...ter/regedit.exe

regedt32.exe(Place in the System32 folder please)
http://webpages.char...er/regedt32.exe

Once all this is done, verify that regedit now works by going to Start-> Run and type in regedit.

If the replacement file took, you will probably get a small window that pops up asking you to verify you want to run this file, click run and uncheck the box that will always prompts for this action.

Restart and let me know how the intial boot goes please?

We are just getting headed in the right direction.

We still have garbage to fix in the registry and other odds and ends to fix.

You dont know what a relief it is to hear the Boot.ini file took! :) :tazz:

Now,lets let 2 RootKit Scanners run,so I know nothing is left lurking deep down!

Please download Rootkit Revealer (link is at the very bottom of the page)
  • Unzip it to your desktop.
  • Open the rootkitrevealer folder and double-click rootkitrevealer.exe
  • Click the Scan button (bottom right)
  • It may take a while to scan (don't do anything while it's running)
  • When it's done, go up to File > Save. Choose to save it to your desktop.
  • Save it as RKR.log
  • Open RKR.log on your desktop and copy the entire contents and paste them here

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click > scan then > next

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Post the contents of those 2 scans in seperate post please.
