Just in the past few days, whenever I try to open an .mpg on the internet thru IE6, Windows Media Player 10 will tell me they've encountered a problem and needs to close, then asks me if I want to send an error report. When I proceed with reporting the error, Microsoft Crash Analysis pops up and tells me that I need to buy mpeg decoder software from MainConcept.

This has NEVER happened before? Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

Sounds to me like you've been hijacked. I'd suggest you take this to the Malware forum and let the experts deal with it.
