Hi all,
I have win xp pro sp2 with all updates installed on an HP Pavillion with 1.5 GHZ Centrino processor and 512 Mb DDR memory. 5 days ago it was working fine, for the last 5 days I get an hourglass in the taskbar and the only way I can do anything is through the task manager and then I can only restart. I took the HD out of the laptop and placed it in a USB removable disc holder. I ran all of the suggested malware detectors that are listed in that forum. I found nothing. I still have the hourglass in the task bar. I have also tried the following:

scannow and chkdsk /r
system restore
windows xp repair

There is nothing showing in the applications running screen on the task manager, however there are several processes running most of which are recognizable. Could someone point me in the right direction please? This is a laptop that I use for work and I really need to get it running again by Monday. Thanks in advance for your support.

Keith,

Thank you for your response. I will read over the instructions again. My problem is that with the hourglass in the taskbar, I cannot select start of anything in the taskbar.

Thanks again Keith,

Now I have the dreaded "an invalid parameter was passed to a service or function". I have the ability to backup my laptop hard drive to my desktop then reload window xp to the laptop and then network the info back into the laptop. My concern is mostly my Outlook calendar, folders and email. Will I be safe to import that info back into the laptop from the desktop? Thanks again for your help.

If you know the make of hard drive, look for their set up utlity, if it includes a write zeros to drive option, run that, use quick as you need the laptop for work

The above isn't essential but it sets the drive to factory condition

When you use XP format as part of set up, use the default full version

Keith,

A quick question. What is the best way to copy my laptop drive to my desktop drive?
