windows not recognising hardware intermittently

can anyone help.my mothers pc loses the use of the keyboard and mouse occasionaly.Also the dsl modem is not recognised sometimes,so she cant connect to the internet.i have reloaded all the software and tried another modem of the same type but it still happens.Now her firewall is conflicting with the software for her isp.She is now using the windows firewall instead.

Have you gone into BIOS Setup at all? I would check thoroughly in setup. How about your time settings, if those get lost you may need a CMOS battery? It should read just over three volts, and causes a lot of problems when it goes bad.

When the computer is booting you tap on a key, maybe del, F1 or F2, usually the screen will tell you. Have the time settings changed?

no the time seems fine,although she has now lost some random desktop icons

Mouse-Keyboard Problems

Need more details: To determine a Starting Point & establish a [Game Plan] – Could be [Software] – [Hardware] – [Resource Conflicts] – [Heat Issue] – [Malware] – [Anti Virus Conflict]

1- What type of Input Devices – [USB] or [PS2]
2- What type of Modem – [PCI] or [USB]
3- How many Antivirus/Firewall/Spyware Programs/Applications are running
4- MFG & Model of PC and Motherboard
5- How old is PC – Laptop or Desktop
6- Any Recent Upgrades or Hardware Installations
7- Describe Modem Problem –
A-Modem is not recognized at Windows Startup –
B-Does [Device Manager] show any Unknown Devices – or Warning Signs
C-Is there long delay when connecting – [CPU Busy]
D-What is [Corrective Action] when this occurs
8- Describe [Loses use of Keyboard] –
A- Mouse & Keyboard [Locks up/Freezes] & have to reboot
B- CPU Busy & No use of Keyboard or Mouse until CPU is idle
C- Input Devices not present when Windows Start
D- What is [Corrective Action] – when this occurs

To monitor CPU:

1-Right Click Empty Space on [Task Bar]
2- Scroll up on [Pop up Menu] & click on [Task Manager] –
3-Click on [Performance] Tab
4-Minimize [Task Manager]
5- Observe [CPU Performance] – watch [Task Manager] Icon on [Task Bar]
