It compresses to 171 Kb. :tazz:

I tried to attach it to this post but it didn't seem to work. Not sure if I did anything wrong or not.

Hi beeps :)

Thanks for e-mailing me the RootKitRevealer log. The reason it is so big is because of how SpySweeper marks files it has already scanned - the RootKitRevealer thinks these are hidden from Windows because of this :)

Anyway, your logs are enough to tell me that a Horseserver infection (aka Haxdoor) which requires some tools to get rid of.
  • First, download HSFix from here
  • After it is downloaded, create a new folder on your desktop called "HSFix" and extract all the files into the newly created folder.
  • Next, download CleanUp! Install it, but do not run it yet.
  • Boot into safe mode: Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
  • Locate the HSFix folder on your desktop, open it, and double-click "hsfix.bat"
  • A log will be produced which you can close out of.
  • Run CleanUp! and let it clean your computer of temp files. Decline when it asks you to log off.
  • Restart your computer and then do a SpySweeper scan (leave all the settings as default). Hopefully this might run to completion now.
  • Restart your computer one last time and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the HSFix log which is located at C:/hslog.txt. Also include the results of the SpySweeper scan,

Hi beeps :)

Please open HijackThis, perform a scan and place a check next to this item :

O23 - Service: ZNXV - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\shane\LOCALS~1\Temp\ZNXV.exe (file missing)

Close all other windows or browsers, click Fixed Checked.

Still in HiJackThis, click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"

Save the startuplist in notepad somewhere safe.

Now run Spy Sweeper.

Under options, locate the Sweep Options tab. Ensure the following items are checked :
  • Sweep Memory
  • Sweep Registry
  • Sweep Cookies
  • Sweep All User Accounts
  • Do not sweep system restore folder
  • Enable Direct Disk Scanning
  • Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
  • Sweep for Rootkits
Then return to the Sweep page and start the sweep.

Please post back with :
  • Startuplist from HijackThis
  • Spy Sweeper session log
  • Fresh HijackThis log after Spysweeper has ran

Hi beeps :)

We are definitely making progress! I am currently analysing your startuplist but its quite large, so please bear with me. I will post back with more instructions later.

In the meantime, I'd like you to run one of the following free online virus scans (must be done from Internet Explorer) :

TrendMicro HouseCall
Panda Activescan
CA Web Scanner

Note that scanners may download and prompt for an ActiveX control - please allow this to happen.

Then post back with the results of the scan.

Finally, do you keep your installed Kaspersky Anti-Virus up to date? Please update it and then run a full scan of you computer and let me know the results.

Hi,
Ooh cool. Panda scan found some stuff.

Spyware:spyware/smitfraud No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\oleext32.dll
Adware:adware/sbsoft No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\rdt.ini
Dialer:dialer.cso No disinfected HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{E53458D2-5A83-4BD1-8DE2-EEEBE73BAB49}
Adware:adware/ist.istbar No disinfected Windows Registry

My Kapersky has finished its trial period and wont scan for me anymore. Will I try to download a new trial version?

Cheers!

Hey beeps :)

We really need to get you up and running with a good updated AV product. Please uninstall Kasperysky and then reboot your computer.

After the reboot, please download avast! 4 Home Edition which is free. All you have to do is register via e-mail before the 60 day period is complete. It is then free for a full year, after which you simply register again for another year :)

Once avast is installed, please update the definitions and perform a full system scan. Let me know the results of the scan in your next post.

I'm still working on your startuplist log and am awaiting some advice from colleagues on a couple of issues :tazz:

Hi infaddict,

I downloaded avast! ( It would only install properly when I chose the minimal version )
I ran a scan and it found two Win32:CTX worms/viruses in a folder in Program files/Activescan/ ( I couldn't find a report to print out with the precise location ). It successfully moved both of them to the virus vault.

So thats them taken care of then so :) although I imagine they are small potato's compared with the nasties panda was unable to defeat.

Sure thing man, thanks. I'll chill back and wait on developments. :tazz: :)

Hi beeps :)

Good job on installing avast and doing the online scan. Let's try a few more things...

Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, please delete the following infected files :

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\oleext32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\rdt.ini
C:\Documents and Settings\shane\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\javainstaller.jar-3c936701-52b55e84.zip

Now copy & paste the blue text below into a new Notepad window (there should be no space or blank line before the first text of REGEDIT4). The click File -> Save As and change the 'Save as Type' box to 'All Files'. Name the file fix.reg and choose to save it on your desktop. Close Notepad.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{E53458D2-5A83-4BD1-8DE2-EEEBE73BAB49}]

Now double click on fix.reg on your desktop and allow it to merge with the registry.

I would like you to re-run the hsfix that you downloaded in a earlier post. As per those instructions, please restart your computer in Safe Mode and then run hsfix.

Restart in Normal Mode and then run SpySweeper. Ensure that 'Scan for Rootkits' is checked in the Sweep options tabs. Now do a sweep of your computer. If it appears to hang at any point, please be patient and give it plenty of time before thinking about cancelling it.

Please post back with :
  • Fresh HijackThis log after following the above instructions
  • hsfix log file (C:\hslog.txt)
  • Spy Sweeper log file from the latest scan
Cheers :tazz:

Hi beeps :)

Great progress, I am hoping we are nearly done... can you let me know how you system is running (any popups, freezing etc)?

Just to be safe, I'd like you to give me another StartupList but this time from Safe Mode.

Please boot into Safe Mode (tap F8 as your computer starts and then select Safe Mode) and do the following :

Open HijackThis
Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"

Save the startuplist in notepad somewhere safe.

Now reboot in normal mode and post me the safe mode StartupList log :tazz:

Hi! Great to see we are making some progress! :tazz:

Well, my system seems to be running quite well. ZoneAlarm gives me lots of popups everytime a program (spysweeper, messenger, firefox etc ) tries to access the internet which I allow, and also says that "messenger is attempting to act as a server" which I deny because I dont know what that means exactly. Should I allow it to do this?

Myy desktop background has not returned but otherwise there dosent seem to be anything obvious going wrong right now.
When shutting down I have been getting a pop up " XPCOM is shutting down ". It then says it is not responding and I have to force the program to end now. Now though, that seems to have stopped happening.
So, on the surface my system is working much better than it was, so I guess we have indeed made great progress. :)

Here is the safe mode startlist:
