I've been having this problem with the spyware/trojan. I have tried everything to remove it including Ad-ware, Spybot, secretmaker, spyware doctor, trojan hunter, and ewido. When it gets removed, it just reinstalls itself again later. Here is a HJT log and ewido log from the computer. Please help!

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please update Ewido (do NOT run it yet!)
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed
  • After the updates are installed, exit Ewido
If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:
===================================================
O16 - DPF: {8C875948-9C60-4381-9248-0DF180542D53} - http://installs.spam...ckerutility.cab
===================================================

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Open Ewido
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "remove", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit Ewido
Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Everything looks clean.. :tazz:

Did you uninstall Secretmaker? I noticed the file for it is missing or did it somehow get deleted by accident?

Are you having any more problems?

Yeah, I installed secretmaker. It probably did get deleted by accident. Secretmaker is supposed to stop thos pop ups with the adware. But I guess they were trojans so it really didn't stop the pop ups but is did stop installation of teh program and notified me of its attempt. The only problem was the trojan would try to install it several times overnight and in the morning, all the secretmakers notification would be on the screen. Long story short, it did stop unexpected insatllation of programs.
Everything seems to be good! thanks you very much.

Please take the following into consideration to maintain a clean computer.

You are very behind on your Windows updates, Windows 2000 is up to Service Pack 4 now..please visit Windows update site to get them..

You need an antivirus program. Here's a couple free ones, please pick one to install.
Antivir
AVG

Now you should go get a firewall. Pick one of these, they are all free.
Kerio
Zonealarm
Sygate

I'll also recommend you to install a monitoring software which will monitor certain areas on your computer and will place alerts when those are being modified. One such software I'll recommend is Prevx, but it's for advanced users as the messages it displays can be hard to decipher. One other similar but more user friendly software is Winpatrol. Both are free programs.
Winpatrol
Prevx

Visit Windows Update regularly to get the latest security updates. You can also enable automatic updates.Your antivirus software and antispyware programs should also be updated regularly. Make a habit of running scans on a timely basis. Be careful about what you download, scan every file before clicking on it.

Additional programs to consider:

Spywareblaster Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
Spywareguard An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware!
IE/Spyad
Adds a list of malicious sites to your Restricted Sites Zone.
Firefox An alternate browser safer than IE

A good article to read:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,
