I've been playing Lineage II for about five weeks now and have been constantly getting the following error:

LUCOM~1.EXE - Application Error
The instruction at "0x77dd6bf0" reference memory at "0x5f17001e". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program.

It's happened in both Lineage II and Paint Shop Pro. I saw a thread where someone was having the exact same problem and it mentioned it was Windows Messenger that causes the problem.

After googling the error I found that WM can be enabled to not run and initially load by doing the following:

Go to RUN then type GPEDIT.MSC. I double clicked on both Computer Configuration and User Configuration and went to Windows Messenger and "Enabled" both for it to not run or start Windows Messenger initially.

I went into WINDOWS-->PROGRAM-->MESSENGER to try and delete the frigging msmsgs.exe file but it wasn't there!

Why am I still getting this frigging instruction error?!

Can someone PLEASE help me with this?

Try following this (sorry if you've done this already):

Windows XP Home

1. Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
2. Click Performance and Maintenance
3. Click Administrative Tools
4. Double click Services Scroll
5. down and highlight "Messenger"
6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
7. Click the STOP button.
8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
9. Click OK


After this, restart your computer and see if the problem reoccurs.

I tried that before posting. It's disabled and the Service Status is already stopped. Found out in another forum that LUCOM~1.EXE has to do with Norton's Live Update service. I've disabled that and will see if that's causing the problem.

A few people have told me I don't even need anti-virus protection any longer.... just spam filtering. Any opinions on that?
