Hello Geeks,

My computer has got infected with WinFixer adware/spyware. It keeps on popping a WINFIXER message every now and then, when I connect to internet. I tried all the steps mentioned in 'First do this' to get rid of various spywares, but all of them do find Virtumonde spyware, but none of them are able to remove this spyware.

I have got Ewido Security log as well. Let me know, if you need that. On my initial analysis, it appears, its the "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttr.dll" file, which appears to be problem-maker of WinFixer.

PLS HELP ME.

Thanks,
Ajay

Hi Ajay Kumar and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

2. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

Sorry for the delay, there was a Staff Meeting,

1. To remove the double spacing in your log, please do the following:
  • Please go to Start >> Run... and type notepad.exe
  • Hit OK.
  • Now go to Format and uncheck WordWrap.
  • Close Notepad.
2. Now please post a fresh HJT log

Thanks,

Trevuren

I didn't know that 'Double-spacing' in log-file posting can delay my issue resolution, otherwise I would have done that earlier itself.

Anway, following is the formatted log-file:

It makes it very difficult to match up with our database if it isn't in single space format.

1. * Please download Fix_Protocol_zones_ranges.reg by Nellie from MWR

* Open the zip file and extract the regfile to your desktop.

* Double click Fix_Protocol_zones_ranges.reg and allow it to merge with the registry.

* REBOOT your system.

2. Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttr.dll

  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rttss.*

This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttr.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssttr - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttr.dll

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi,

I went through all the processes as mentioned by you. I ran the VundoFix in SAFE MODE, and it automatically opened up the 'HijackThis' process to open up the 'HijackThisLog'. I checked the ones mentioned by you to FIX, but it didn't show the entry
"O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttr.dll"
in HijackThisLog. So, the HJT couldn't Fix the MSEvents Object entry. Other 2 entries mentioned by you were present and I checked them before clicking the FIX button in HijackThis. Don't understand, what can be the problem.

One more thing, I noticed that my internet has become slow drastically. It took me more than 5 trials to reply to this post. Has any of the steps mentioned by you is affecting my Internet performance problem. I can see the new postings, but my REPLY page expires, before submitting my reply.

Anyway, I continued with other steps mentioned by you and following are various log files asked by you:

1. Please rerun Active Scan and please provide me the results of the scan as I rewuested in the previous post.

2, In addition, please update the definitions to Ewido and run it in Safe mode. Keep the log and please post it in your next reply.

3. Please provide me with a fresh HJT log , not one produced in Safe Mode, and post in into this thread.

Regards,

Trevurem

Hi Trevuren,

It appears, I am not able to run the 'ActiveScan' successfully from pandasoftware.com website. When, I click on 'Scan your PC', it gives various options and then I click to 'Scan My Computer'. It doesn't open up the full/enlarged SCAN IE window, but I can see various options. This process starts the scanning process, but after continuing for about 50% scanning, it gives the following message:
"No Profiles have been created. To create a new profile, use the mail icon in the control panel."

After this, it exits the scan and gives the message "Malicious software has been found".

It appears from the 'Control Panel' --> Mail icon, its prompting to create a Outlook Mail profile, but I don't have Outlook mail in my desktop. I don't know what to do, to do the full ActiveScan.

Will it be OK, if I just provide the 1. 'Ewido Security' log in SAFE mode AND 2. HJT Log in NORMAL Mode ?

Pls suggest accordingly.

Thanks,
Ajay

I need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Options, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttr.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [b7wATaf] C:\WINDOWS\njlja.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssttr - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttr.dll (file missing)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

    C:\WINDOWS\njlja.exe

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures.

Thanks a lot Trevuren. Your assurance about my clean HJT log really gave me a BIG relief. :tazz:

I am not aware of any other Spyware/Malware as such, other than some general online poker/lottery advertisements probably sent through Virtumonde only.

Pls give me the rest of instructions to pursue other CLEANUP steps.

Also, can I start the MS-AntiSpyware after all the clean-up process ?
Moreover, I wasn't able to run the ActiveScan from Pandasoftware. Do you see any specific reason for that?

Thanks,
Ajay
