Ajay, if you really want to check all your system thoroughly, i suggest you do the following: (if not, just post back your decision and I will provide you with the necessary instructions to finish.

I need you to download MWav to a convenient location.

This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
I need you to run MWav by double-clicking on mwav.exe. This scan only produces a report, it doesn't clean your system. I will analyze the report and recommend a course of action depending on the results.

Put a check next to the below items before scanning:
  • Memory
  • Startup Folders
  • Drive - All Local Drives
  • Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
  • Registry
  • System Folders
  • Services
  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files
Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items", please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Trevuren,

As per your suggestion, I downloaded the MWav tool as well and did a full scan as you suggested. After completion of this scan, which lasted for more than 3:30 hrs, it says there are still some viruses/trojans. :tazz:

What do you suggest the next step ?

Following is the MWav log generated after completion of MWav scan:

1. "Invalid Object" entries refer to orphaned and harmless registry entries. Clean up your registry

2. A lot of items are in your Norton Quaratine. Than can be emptied:
For NAV 2005 proceed as follows:

1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program and click Norton AntiVirus.
2. In the left pane, click Reports.
3. Click View Quarantined Items.
4. In the right pane, select the files that you want to remove.
To select multiple items, press and hold down the Ctrl key while clicking the items that you want to select for deletion. To select everything in Quarantine, click the first item in the list, and then press Shift+End.
5. Click Delete Item.
6. When prompted "Warning! Are you sure that you want to remove this item from Quarantine," click Yes.
7. Close the Quarantine window, and then exit Norton AntiVirus.

For other versions, consult the Norton site for the proper instructions.

3. Anything in System Restore is currently harmless and will be removed during the final cleanup

4. Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
  • Click the Free Trial link under to "SpySweeper" to download the program.
  • Install it. Once the program is installed, it will open.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
  • Once the definitions are installed, click Options on the left side.
  • Click the Sweep Options tab.
  • Under What to Sweep please put a check next to the following:
    • Sweep Memory
    • Sweep Registry
    • Sweep Cookies
    • Sweep All User Accounts
    • Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
    • Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
    • Sweep for Rootkits
    • Please UNCHECK Do not Sweep System Restore Folder.
  • Click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.
5. Produce a new HJT log and if everythiing still looks good, we can finish this off Ajay.

Trevuren

Apologies for the delayed reply.

It looks my PC has cleared to a great extent now. Anyway, following are my SpySweeper Log and HJT Log for further suggestions.

Pls do suggest, what else need to be done. Now, I have a lot of anti-spyware installed on my computer. Which all need to be retained and which all anti-spyware should be un-installed ? Don't wanna my computer to be slowed down because of too much anti-spywares installed.
And yes, thanks a lot for all your help. :tazz:

Thanks,
Ajay

Keep essentially what you have paid for. I would keep ewido and run it weekly at a minimum. If you are not going to buy it, then you have to manually update the definitions). Remove all diagnostic programs that I may have had you install.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
