Hi,

I seem to have been infected with Winfixer - where do these things come from !!!!!!! Soi much for my ultra high security McAfee.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

• At this point press enter once.
  
• Next you will see:

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hello again Gary

Well we got rid of Vundo but the downloader file, ConHook is present. Normally this file disappears when Vundo is loaded, but just lately it seems to get left behind. Let's try this:

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from Process Explorer

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from KillBox

Then boot up in SAFE MODE

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on every instance of C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll 's under winlogon click OK.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on every instance of C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll then click the kill button.

Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run HijackThis and place a check mark or tick beside each of the following:[/b].

Then on KillBox top bar, press tools/delete temp files and follow those prompts and say yes to everything, then let it reboot.

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

ok - first, forgot to tell you that this PC does have 3 settings (multiple users).

I ran process explorer, but could not find any instance of "gebyv.dll" as requested

then I ran highjack this, and the only one I could find and put a tick next to was 020 - Winlogon yada yada yada jkhfd

Then I ran killbox, and nothing happened when I clicked on the red "X", and after chosing delete temp files the computer did not reboot itself.

Hello again

Well the reason you had difficulty was that the ConHook changed its name. Just before doing this fix, have a look at the O2O entry; is it still the one below or has it changed again? Let's try again:

Let’s start by booting up in SAFE MODE

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on every instance of C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayv.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayv.dll 's under winlogon click OK.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on every instance of C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayv.dll then click the kill button.

Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run HijackThis and place a check mark or tick beside each of the following:.

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {79A576C4-B7A9-47EC-B57C-2CE5CA6ECC6A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfd.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B313D637-F405-4052-AC37-E2119AB3C8F8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayv.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddayv - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayv.dll

Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.

Next run KillBox and paste this line below into the box, select delete on reboot then press the red X Button, say YES to the 1st prompt but NO to reboot now

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayv.dll

Then on KillBox top bar, press tools/delete temp files and follow those prompts and say yes to everything, then let it reboot.

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log for all profiles. Mark them accordingly to save any confusion. Post them into this thread one after another with a small gap.

Tanks so much for your help so far.... here are my logs, there are three of them. Note I had the following problems when doing your instructions:
1) when I first ran highjackthis, 020 - BHO ~~~~ jkhfd.dll (file missing) was not listed
2) when I ran KillBox, after I clicked the red X button, nothing seemed to happen
3) also while in KillBox after I chose tools/delete temp files, nothing seemed to happen and I had to reboot myself.

Are there any more for me to see? Was any of those the main user also?

I only get three choices when I log on, so I assume one of these is the main user (usually just my wife and I use the computer, and we each have our own configs, but we also have one for our daughter).

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.
