Hello,
There are a number of options for freeware AVI to DVD conversion utilities. I highly recommend taking a look around www.videohelp.com and you can see a large number of useful video tools. I will post a link to the section on that site dedicated to these applications and to the specific utitlies that I have used in the past.

My personal favorite is Avi2DVD. I found it very easy to use and has great output results by using the amazing freeware opensource HC mpeg encoder. Take a look here:

Another option that I have used is DIKO, I have less experience with it than Avi2DVD, but found that it did the job.
