Updating problem

Hey Family, I'm using a genuine copy of Windows XP SP2. But lately I've had difficulty updating Windows. As I go to Windows Update, it scans my computer and shows up the needed updates and everything but after I review the updates the pop up windows comes up and it takes ages for "preparing for download" before finally being unable to install my updates.

Why? Cheers
