I am having multiple problems/error messages.
First, upon starting I always get the following message (RUNDLL):
Error loading c:\PROGRA~1\WILTA~1\APPS\CDA\CDAENG~1.DLL
However, I can click this and appear to be able to access all programs as normal.

I've also just started getting a message from Explorer:
Explorer has caused an error in KERNELL32.DLL. Explorer will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer.

Sometimes I can just close the message box and re-sign onto Explorer. Other times, the message box itself won't go away and my computer freezes up.

Even more concerning, I can be on an internet page, and suddenly my screen goes black, and I get the blue screen that says to push any key or CRL-ALT-DELETE, but neither works, and I have to push the power button to reboot. I'm concerned that this is not good for the system.

All this has occurred in the order presented, over the last few weeks, with increasing frequency. Seems that this all started after my college age son was home for the holidays. I know he downloaded some things on Real Player and also installed a new ATI Video Card (our old Radeon was shot). Don't know if either of these could have caused the problems?!

I have run Norton's Anti-Virus, Scan Disk (no errors) and Disk Clean up, but my Defragmenter keeps stalling out.

I am dependent upon my computer for a home business so please help!

The error is related to the WildTanget download engine. It's considered spyware, and I'd suggest first trying to remove it using add/remove programs.

I removed the Wild Tangent program through Control Panel, turned off my computer, then rebooted. I still get the error loading message.

The following is stated: Error loading c:\PROGRA~1\WILTA~1\APPS\CDA\CDAENG~1.DLL System cannot find the path specified.

As mentioned before, this is merely annoying, and does not seem to directly effect any other system functions. (unless the other operating problems are related to this problem)

My real concerns lie in the second part of my post.

1. The increasing frequency of this message: (now about every 5 minutes or so)
Explorer has caused an error in KERNELL32.DLL. Explorer will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer.

2. Suddenly my screen goes black, and I get the blue screen that says to push any key or CRL-ALT-DELETE, but neither works, and I have to push the power button to reboot.

Thanks for any help out there!

Go into add/remove programs and remove (if there):

webrebates
ebates

You have a number of randomonly named files on your system. We like to start with an online virus and trojan scan. Even though you have antivirus software on your system, it can become corrupted by malware.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Reboot your PC.

Download Ad-aware from: http://www.geekstogo...n=download&id=5

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file
  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives
  • Scan Active Processes
  • Scan Registry
  • Deep Scan Registry
  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
  • Scan my Hosts file
  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
  • All of your hard drives
-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
  • Include additional process information
  • Include additional file information
  • Include environment information
  • Include additional object details
-> Click the Tweak button and select:
  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
  • Use Custom Scanning Options
-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

-> Reboot your computer.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and we'll remove what's left.

I've spent most of the day on my computer trying to do your suggested steps.

Housecall took over two hours and had a couple hundred items, mostly c:\restore.... which said cannot access. The remaining files were all c:\windows\temp and were noncleanable, so I deleted them all.

I have an old version of Norton's - should I delete it and just use Housecall in the future?

Next, I ran the Moosoft program, which ran much faster and found fewer problems.

I ran AdWare Se at least six times!! It would freeze up in the middle of quaranting or deleting. It started with almost 900 items, and last time I ran it there were only 12 restore files which it said that it could not delete because the files were being used. I checked the box to have them removed at the next reboot, but not sure if they were.

What exactly are these restore files that keep coming up and cannot be deleted?

I got to the step where you instructed me to delete the temporary files, but didn't really understand how to delete these. I did a search and there are lots of folders in my c drive named Temp. Should I delete all of these??

I deleted the Temporary Internet files and all offline content.

I will rescan with HiJackThis when I am sure that I have handled the Temp folders correctly!

Thank you again for your help!

PS: Love the Proverb!

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

I completed the steps for HijackThis, but regarding the next step:
(Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu). )

I tapped continually but my desktop came up as usual. I assume that something different should have happened, or how and where do I "select Safe Mode from the menu"?

Can't say "thanks" enough times!

You have to tap F8 at the right time. Just as it boots up and you first see the logo of whatever pops up first. I usually wait until it completely turns off...and then I start tapping the key until I see the page where you're given the option of safe mode.

I tried it again, but it still didn't work.

Specifically: I turned off the computer. I waited about a minute. I started the computer and immediately began tapping F8 at the top of my keyboard. I continued tapping as the Dell logo on a black background showed up and desktop loaded. There was never a page that gave me an option for safemode.

I also had to click ok on my Windows password screen, and entered my Bootguard password while continueing to tap F8. Could these security features or my wallpaper have any effect on not being able to get to Safe Mode? Is there any other way to do it?

Try tapping the F5 key, or hold down the Ctrl key while booting.

Any idea why I lost "Bootguard" ( a password security program to keep my kids off the computer)?
