I too am trying to remove winfix from my computer. I have installed and used ewido, nailfix,dsrzip,cleanup & lspfix

I awoke to the following message the file c:\windows\system32\pmnll.dll is infected byt he downloader-agr trojan and can't be cleaned. I am unable to clean, delete or quarintine it. Can anyone help?

I also recently poseted a request for help for a winfix problem, but no one has replied to my post. I am worried that these two are related and hope to get some help!!!!!

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection with ConHook. With that sort of luck don’t bother buying lottery tickets and take extra care when crossing roads.. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep intended to deal with Vundo B..

I note that you are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Spyware Doctor from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
You will first be presented with a warning.
It should look like this

Press enter to continue....
At this point press enter once.
Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
and then press enter:

Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Reboot normally.

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Edit - we crossed in the ether, fix below revised

With this sort of infection and 4 profiles, this could be a long task. I think you have a choice to make at this point.

Choice one, keep 4 users on this PC. With 4 users only one should have administrators rights, all others should be limited accounts. The fix will probably have to be run from all four profiles to find out which profile has the infection.

Choice two, delete all accounts except the main user account. The other three accounts will have all of their documents placed in a folder on the desktop by Windows, you will lose NOTHING. We then only deal with one profile, fix it and then recreate the other profiles when clean.

Whilst you are thinking, here is the fix based upon this HJT log.

Please discard your previous download of vundofix, sometimes they get corrupted.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
You will first be presented with a warning.
It should look like this

By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
Press enter to continue....
At this point press enter once.
Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
and then press enter:

Press Enter to continue with the fix.
Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
staff then press enter:
At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\system32\qrqss.*
Press Enter to continue with the fix.
The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqrq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll
After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
Press enter to exit the programme then manually reboot your computer.
Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Post a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

As long as you can get me throught the creating folders and saving the data of the other 3 users, I think that is the way to go. I'd hate to have to run the fix for every account and have to have you check everything. Choice two seem to be the way to go...
Should I go ahead and follow the instructions above?

Hello again Chris

The Vundofix log looks great. I had a quick look at the HJT log, which appears to me to have been created in safe mode. Please rescan and place a checkmark or tick beside this entry O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqrq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll (file missing) - click Fix Checked, reboot normally and create a fresh log for me to check.

In fact since it has gone so well now, please post HJT logs from all profiles consecutively, but mark them appropriately to save confusion.

I'm sure I can do all four together.

BTW, I have just tried to post your PM to me and had no luck either. If you get further problems, send a PM to admin, he's a nice chap and may be able to help.

Looking at the little adjustments necessary to each, it was probably the right decision not to delete the profiles; I know kids don't like sharing with their parents particularly, but sometimes the work involved can be immense. It is easy for me at this end, you are doing all the work.

Your Profile Fix

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Change user, logon as CJ

Fix for User 2 CJ

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file, and delete it:

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

I think anyone that has the patience and temerity to clean 4 profiles should become a Saint. You can see now how difficult cleaning profiles can be. When you hit the correct profile for the infection, it goes from all of them, the trouble is that you can't tell by looking which profile is the infectious one so it becomes laborious.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz:

Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

BTW, my system restore has not been working lately. I had tried to do a system restore to try to correct this problem earlier in the week, but was unsuccessful. I'm going to go through the steps you mentioned and see if it will now work.
