Let me start off by saying I really have no idea what to do, I probably should learn a little bit. I noticed an icon flashing in my tray that said my computer was infected by spyware and I needed to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. When I click on the site it tells me to download one of these certain programs. Two of them are Spy Axe and Spy Trooper, which I read was a bogus program. I'm going to post my Hijack This log and hopefully someone can spot a problem. I also noticed that it somehow disabled my Symantic Antivirus that the college I attend gave me, so I re-installed Norton Internet Security 2005 just to be safe, but I don't know where to go from here. The website it sends me to is http://www.syserrors.com but it does not seem to be a legitamate site. I will post the log file in my next post because my internet seems to not respond and I want to make sure that I get this post in. Thanks,

Hi Alex,

Please download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and the VX2 Cleaner Plug-in. Install Ad-Aware using the default options, then install vx2cleaner_inst.exe, taking all the defaults there as well.

Run Ad-Aware, update to the latest definitions, then click on Add-ons in the lefthand column. Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool. Click "OK", then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given. Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.

Reboot your PC and run Ad-Aware again. This time, click on the Start button in Ad-Aware, select "Perform smart system scan" and click Next. Once the scan finishes, click "Next" again. Select all objects found (right click anywhere in the list of found objects and click "Select All Objects"). Click "Next" one more time, then "OK" to confirm the removal.

You will be prompted to set Ad-Aware to run on reboot, click "OK". Exit Ad-Aware and restart your PC once again.

When Ad-Aware starts up, click on "Start", then "Next". Follow the steps above if anything is found, or click "Finish", then exit Ad-Aware.

Then please post a new HijackThis log and let's clean up the rest.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Open Ewido and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan (without the vx2 plugin). Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan [color=blue](Note: It may take a couple of minutes)[/color
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Here is all that you requested. The only problem that I still notice is that for some reason my Symantic Antivirus Auto-Protect won't work, not sure what I can do about that. When I noticed Symantic not working I re-installed my Norton Internet Security 2005 and there is some repair error on that as well. I'm not sure if it stemmed from the malware or what. Hopefully everything looks clean.

Couple files related to the Norton toolbar appear to be missing..I think that's why Autoprotect is not working..

You may have to completely uninstall and reinstall Norton again..for that, follow the instructions on this page:

I can't run the program because of a version of Symantic Antivirus that is on my computer required by my university. When I try and uninstall that, it asks for a password. I've heard that it's bad to run two different virus programs at once, like Nortan and Symantic, so what would be the best thing to do? I guess I can take my computer in and have them remove and reinstall Symantic.

Yes it's bad to run two antivirus programs at once..but Norton and Symantec are the very same program, Symantec is the name of the company that makes Norton Antivirus. :tazz:

In that case it's best to take it to the IT department of the university and let them handle the issue.

Your log looks clean now.

Now let's reset your restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please take the following into consideration to maintain a clean computer.

I'll also recommend you to install a monitoring software which will monitor certain areas on your computer and will place alerts when those are being modified. One such software I'll recommend is Prevx, but it's for advanced users as the messages it displays can be hard to decipher. One other similar but more user friendly software is Winpatrol. Both are free programs.

Make a habit of running scans on a timely basis. Be careful about what you download, scan every file before clicking on it.
